It seems like everyone is an expert when it comes to acne. With so many myths flying around about what causes it and how to get rid of it, it can be hard to know what is the truth and what is not. Not having correct knowledge on the topic can also make it hard for you to properly treat your own case of acne. Junk Food Causes Acne
When it comes to food and acne there are a lot of misunderstandings. Since lots of teens like to eat junk foods like pizza, chocolate, and french fries many people believe that these foods cause breakouts. While many experts do not believe that there is a connection between pimples and food, many others are starting to see a connection between a diet high in dairy products, sugar, and processed foods and acne.
It is always best to eat whole foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, and whole grains as opposed to foods that are full of sugar, white flour, and unhealthy fats like trans fats. The more balanced your diet is the better your skin will ultimately look. If you can't cut out junk food entirely just be sure to eat less of it.
You Don't Wash Your Face Enough
While it is important for everyone to take good care of their skin, and that includes washing their face twice a day, those without acne may think that those with acne don't wash their face enough. This is false. Acne starts far below the skin's surface, and if you wash your face too much you'll actually do your skin more harm than good. Washing your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser is necessary, but don't go overboard with harsh exfoliators and scrubs. These will only spread bacteria causing future breakouts.
If you're washing your face in the morning and before bed, you're caring for your skin correctly. If mid-day oil is a problem, buy some oil-blotting sheets and stick them in your bag so they're handy so you can reduce facial shine. But there is definitely no need to wash your face in the middle of the day.
Laying in the Sun Makes Acne Go Away
Not only is this claim false, but it's also a sure fire way to age your skin too early. Did you know that 80 percent of premature aging is caused by unprotected sun exposure? Tan skin may hide redness from acne, but it doesn't do anything to make your acne go away permanently. That sun exposure will give you wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots though.
Before you hit the beach, grab your sunblock and apply it at least every two hours. You don't want to look like you're a decade older than you really are in another 5 years. Be sure to use an oil-free sunblock so you won't clog your pores accidentally.
Acne Is Only a Problem for Teens
If only this claim were actually true. While adults who deal with acne don't have it nearly as bad as they did when they were teens, acne can still rear its ugly head at any time. If you're dealing with acne in your late 20s or 30s, you probably only deal with the occasional few breakouts. For women, breakouts can occur around the time they get their period. If you have more than just the occasional breakout, be sure to see a dermatologist or esthetician for help. There are lots of different ways to treat acne; there is no reason to continue to suffer from breakouts.
Nothing Will Get Rid of Acne
If you're dealing with acne and worried you'll never find a solution, I've got good news for you. Your acne is treatable if you find the right products and medicines. A visit to a dermatologist is highly recommended so your skin can be evaluated by an expert instead of wasting money on over the counter products that may or may not work for you. Getting expert advice from a dermatologist or an esthetician helps take the guesswork out of which products are right for your skin.
You may need a new home skin care regime, antibiotics, or even stronger prescriptions to keep your acne away, but you'll never know if you don't go and ask for help. Don't be embarrassed; it's what they do. No one is going to judge you.
