If you haven’t heard of Volition (it’s okay, we hadn’t either), you’re going to want to listen up because it’s a new kind of beauty brand. Ever have an idea for a product you wish existed? Well, if it’s not on the market already, Volition will make it happen. In the collaborative beauty community, members submit product ideas and vote on the ones they’d like to see created, and then Volition handles the rest.
That brings us to the products and, more specifically my latest obsession: the Illuminating Body Milk ($35). It’s part moisturizer, part skin-illuminating highlighter, which may sound excessive for an allover body lotion, but that’s point—or rather the exact opposite of the point. Julie, the Volition member behind this product wanted to make something that would diffuse imperfections and impart a glow, but do so without the glittery look of what’s already on the market. Enter the light-reflecting particle that’s 40 times smaller and more refined than what’s used in other body products today.
I was almost taken aback the first time I opened the jar. It looks like a highlighter, one I would gleefully sweep across my cheekbones. But once you put it on your skin, it absorbs instantly and leaves behind a subtle radiance. My skin went from dull and dry to glowy with one dollop. It also should be noted that I hate body lotion. It just always feels slimly to me—too greasy, too wet—nothing I want on my body. But this body milk is so sheer and lightweight that I had none of the typical urges to wash my hands or towel off.
When I want to add a little color, I mix it with a squirt or two of Volition’s Thanakha Radiant Bronzer ($40). The combination is basically the closest I’ll ever get to J.Lo’s glow.
