We look to the Oscars red carpet to see the most glamorous red carpet looks Hollywood has to offer and to the Met Gala for the most daring—but we look to MTV's Video Music Awards for edgier inspiration. Typically, musicians tend to be a little more playful with their hair and makeup, especially for an event as fun and youthful as this one. The award show is being held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and we're particularly pumped to see what the music industry's best would bring this year.
We all know that when interesting people get famous, their colorful personalities seem to influence the industry at large. And since 2018 has introduced us to some pretty interesting characters (Cardi B blew up this year, as did Camila Cabello), we can't wait to see all the red carpet looks.
Of course, we were not disappointed by this year's MTV VMAs. The unique red carpet trends ranged from glittery eye makeup to bold black bobs and pixies, and we were living for it.
Keep scrolling to see which celebs we think killed it the most.
Winnie Harlow is giving us major Cher vibes with her long sleek hair and major gold eye makeup.
No one rocks a slicked-back look like Shay Mitchell.
Cardi B's pixie and purple bottom liner are showstoppers.
Team Byrdie is going through a hardcore '80s phase right now, and by the looks of her big hair, big earrings, and a bright red lip, so is Camila Cabello.
Jasmine Sanders aka Golden Barbie is getting us very excited for fall with that vampy wine-colored lip.
Hayley Kiyoko's brows are so good it hurts. To re-create those off-duty model bushy brows, we recommend ModelCo's brow gel ($23).
Not to be dramatic, but we gasped a little when we saw Amandla Stenberg's shimmery red eye and short black bob. So daring and foxy.
The shiniest hair in the music industry definitely belongs to Ariana Grande. It's always nice to see her wearing it down.
Noah Cyrus's fresh skin and no-makeup makeup are unique for a red carpet but also matched with her cool shaggy bob, the look is super youthful. (Which is good, considering the singer is 18 years old.)
Grace VanderWaal looks like an effortless French girl here. Loving that silver eyeliner.
We love Olivia Munn's subtle lilac under-liner—it's the perfect complement to her disco dress.
Iggy Azealia makes a case for wet-looking waves.
Matching your eyeliner design to your dress pattern? Rita Ora makes it a look we'll consider for our next night out.
What's your highlighter, Millie Bobby Brown? Makeup artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato amped up her glow and finished with a swipe of baby-pink lip gloss.
We're digging Karlie Kloss's messy waves and vampy gold liner.
