Venus Williams has known what it's meant to work hard and play hard since her elementary years. Throughout her more than 25-year career, she's touched down on tennis courts worldwide and become one of the most decorated women in the sport. Expectedly, Williams' day-to-day schedule has typically been filled to the brim for decades. On top of her athletic commitments, she runs an interior design firm, fashion line, and sunscreen company. But as she's grown older, the tennis champion has realized that in order to "do it all," self-care is non-negotiable.
With the COVID-19 pandemic allowing her to spend more time at home, Williams has been able to double down on her tried-and-true relaxation rituals and find new ways to decompress. One brand that has been a staple in her self-care routine is Asutra. Williams first engaged with the brand as a customer, incorporating their magnesium pain and sleep support products into her regimen. After falling in love with how they made her feel physically and mentally, she signed on to join the brand as a part-owner and Chief Brand Officer. To celebrate Asutra's recent debut in Target stores nationwide, we had the chance to catch up with Williams. Ahead, she fills us in on the brand, the products she likes to use before bed and post-workout, and what she's looking forward to in 2021.
The One Thing You Love About Asutra
"I love that Asutra is woman-owned, woman-led, and socially responsible. One of the things that attracted me to Asutra is their mantra that it's not about how you look, but more importantly, about how you feel. Asutra helps you feel great so that you can be great. We believe that self-care isn't selfish; it's important."
The One Thing You've Always Done to Practice Self-Care
"One of the most important things you can do to practice self-care is to listen to your body. If my body is telling me I’m tired, I’m going to rest. Self-care is a basic human need, so I encourage others to prioritize themselves and their mental and physical wellbeing so they can be the best version of themselves."
The One New Self-Care Practice You've Picked Up During The Pandemic
"I started a workout series on Instagram Live called #CoachVenus because just like everyone, I was quarantined at home for months and wanted to find a way to lift people’s spirits and encourage others (and myself!) to stay healthy and active. It was a great way for me to get a good workout in and have fun doing so."
The One Wellness Lesson You've Learned Over The Last Year
"I’ve learned the importance of prioritizing myself. This past year has given me the opportunity to slow down, work on myself both physically and mentally, and just take a step back from everything we all were so accustomed to. It was the longest I’ve been able to spend at home in many years so I tried to make the most of it by giving myself permission to relax and revitalize."
The One Thing You Always Do As Part Of Your Nighttime Routine
"I love spraying Asutra’s Mist Your Mood Aromatherapy Spray ($15) all over my bedroom. I go a little crazy with it. The lavender smells so good, and I find the scent so soothing and calming. I bring it with me all around the world for tournaments because it is a lifesaver when it comes to jet lag. I can’t live without it."
The One Product That Always Helps You Get A Good Night's Sleep
"Asutra’s Dream the Night Away Melatonin Lotion with Magnesium ($32) is absolutely amazing. After long days on and off the court, sometimes it can be a little difficult for me to completely unplug and fall asleep. I apply it all over about 30 minutes before going to bed, and it truly helps me wind down and feel relaxed."
The One Product You Always Use After a Tough Workout
"Asutra’s Relieve Your Pain Magnesium Menthol Lotion ($30)– it’s life-changing. After an intense workout or practice, I put it on, and it helps to relieve sore muscles and achy joints. I also love their Ultra Magnesium Oil and Everyday Magnesium Lotion. Most of us really don’t get enough magnesium in our diets, so I try to find easy ways to replenish, and using these products definitely helps."
The One Thing You're Looking Forward to in 2021
"I’m excited to start living somewhat normally again—if anyone knows what that means anymore. I’m looking forward to getting back on the court, expanding my businesses EleVen by Venus, V Starr, and Happy Viking. Hopefully, I see some friends and family who I wasn’t able to see as much this past year given the circumstances."
