I Tested 5 Vegan Mascaras for Longevity During My Workouts

Updated 03/12/18

We fully support brands that are cruelty-free and don't test on animals. But of the many misconceptions about vegan mascaras (one of them being that vegan can be interchanged with organic and natural), one in particular that we want to prove wrong is that it doesn't stay on as well as conventional ones. What better way to test out the longevity of a mascara than through a sweaty workout?

While I would take off my makeup before a workout in an ideal world, most of the time I'm rushing to class after submitting my article right at deadline. So the makeup I have on for work (mascara included) stays on until I take a shower after class. I tried out lots of vegan mascaras at my different workout classes. Scroll down to see which ones made the cut.

Pacifica Black Crystals Supercharged Extending Mineral Mascara $14

Workout: Work Train Fight, Group Workout Class

The circuit workout class at boxing gym Work Train Fight incorporates full-body workouts in 55 minutes. You're doing cardio warm-ups (think mountain climbers, burpees, jump squats, and planks), a rotation between boxing stations and weights, and then ending with some variation of abs on the floor. This brand-new mascara from Pacifica, which is infused with quartz powder, really gives lashes dimension and did not smudge after this hard workout. Not surprisingly, it's sold out.

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Ultra-Natural Mascara $24

Workout: Barry's Bootcamp, Arms & Abs

My first time going to Barry's was an emotional rollercoaster. No matter how much I mentally prepared for it, I did not expect how intense it got. I'm not a runner, so I had to really push myself during the treadmill sections, and by the end of it, I was drenched in sweat from head to toe. Somehow my mascara wasn't smeared all over my face like I expected it to be. This mascara from Juice Beauty contains aloe leaf juice, carnauba wax, and candelilla wax that really make sure it does not flake or smudge.

If it can get through Barry's, I believe it can get through anything.

W3ll People Expressionist Pro Mascara $22

Workout: Work Train Fight, training with Nikki Campbell

During a one-on-one session with Campbell, we focused on the different plank workouts to build up my core. The session was only 30 minutes, but I felt it nonetheless. This mascara from W3LL People held up pretty well with minimal flaking or smudging. It's made with a botanical blend that really nourishes the lashes and gives me the volume I seek.

Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara $24

Workout: Flybarre

Forever a barre addict, one of my favorite classes to take is Flybarre. Its hour-long sessions give me a full-body workout and I feel it most in my arms. Depending on the instructor, intensity can be mild with little to no sweat or intense with me reaching for my towel between different sections. This one, in particular, was somewhere in the middle, and whenever I caught my reflection in the mirror, I saw that my mascara only smudged a little. Made with an orchid stem cell complex to encourage lash growth, fiber protein to soothe lashes, and vitamin B to moisturize, this is a great option to take you from work to your workout without worrying that you'll look like a raccoon by the end of it.

Eyeko Yoga Waterproof Mascara $25

Workout: Work Train Fight, Group Workout Class

I changed up mascaras and tried this one from Eyeko for my next Work Train Fight class. It promises no flaking or smudging for up to 24 hours. It lasted me through work all day, which was promising. After my 55-minute class, I looked at myself in the mirror and can verify that it stays true to its promise. Made with a Korean waterproof technology, this mascara really does not move.
