Thanks, Mom, for Introducing Me to These 5 Underrated Beauty Products

skincare products

The first memories I have of makeup involve my mom putting on lipstick. In all of her purses, she always made sure to have a red or a warm nude shade to reapply before entering church, family gatherings, or even the mall. I carefully watched from the back of the car as she rapidly swiped the product on her lips, looking at the rearview mirror, which added that emperifollá element to her look.

My mother didn’t necessarily encourage me to start wearing makeup, but I saw how that part of her daily routine made her feel, and I wanted to follow her steps. So, when I was allowed to use something more daring than my Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm, I started sneaking into her makeup stash to experiment with eyeliners, blushes, and, of course, lipsticks. She never got mad when I used her products, but she sure knew who to blame when she couldn’t find one (oops). That’s how I discovered my love for everything beauty, and the way that it always makes me feel connected to my mom, no matter where I am.

Even though we now live in different countries, we still share the products we’ve been loving lately via FaceTime. My mom even shows me an unboxing of a monthly beauty box she receives, and has her own makeup station set up with a big mirror and drawers full of products. With that in mind, the first thing I did when I went back to visit my parents was to take a look at her beauty collection. To my surprise, I discovered some products that I’ll be adding to my own beauty arsenal ASAP. From a non-greasy SPF to an eyeliner that’s so easy to smudge and blend, here are the amazing products I discovered while browsing through my mom’s beauty corner.

Coppertone Pure and Simple Botanicals Faces Sunscreen Lotion $5

I’ve talked with my mom about the importance of wearing SPF every day, which is why, when I asked her about new products she currently love, she excitedly showed me this one first. “It has zinc oxide, which I learned protects your skin from sun damage,” she informed me. This ingredient lays on the top of your skin to give it a broad spectrum protection, which means that it protects even the deepest layers of your skin from UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. It’s also dermatologically tested and free of not-so-great ingredients like parabens, dyes, and fragrances.

Jordana Share Tweet Pin it Easyliner Retractable Eye Pencil $3

I remember using this liner when I was a teen but I had totally forgot its capabilities until I spotted it again at my mom’s makeup drawer. It easily blends with eyeshadow, which is perfect when you want to create a smokier eye look.

Avon 2-in-1 Lip Tattoo Lip Line & Fill Duo $12

This one is my mom’s latest favorite product and I totally understand why. Just like a tattoo, this stain looks and feels like it’s part of your skin and lasts all day and night. It also comes with a lip liner to precisely draw the shape of your lips and a felt tip on the other side to color in the rest. I’ll take one in every color, please!

Clinique eyeliner
Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen $22

I remember discovering my favorite liquid eyeliner at my mom’s drawer when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, it was discontinued so I couldn’t purchase it again. This time, I found this one from Clinique, which I’m happy to say is fully in stock. Its inky formula and thin brush allows me to create the perfect cat-eye; it also dries quickly and lasts all day.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick $6

I not only inherited my mom’s freckles but also her love for a good lipstick. Her latest obsession? This Milani lipstick in the shade 88 Raising Berry, which creates the perfect elegant complement to her freckles and dark eyebrows.
