Welcome to Beauty Diaries, an intimate look into the beauty routines and spending habits of real women in the industry (and beyond). We already spoke with Sheena Yaitanes, the founder of Kosås Cosmetics. Next, we have the beauty and wellness routine of Hillary Peterson, Marin County resident and the founder and president of all-natural skincare line, True Botanicals. Keep reading for a glimpse into her week of nontoxic skincare, fitness, intermittent fasting, and more. Enjoy!
7 a.m. First thing after waking, I drink a full glass of water with a teaspoon of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, which boosts detoxification.
2 p.m. I really try to make Sunday as much about taking care of myself as possible. It usually involves a long bike ride with my husband followed by a head-to-toe masking session using our Resurfacing Moisture Mask and Resurfacing Body Mask. Both are made with lactic acid, which I love because it gently exfoliates to rid skin of dryness and dullness, but it also stimulates collagen production. And with dead skin cells out of the way, my body and face oils can absorb and deliver nutrients deeper.
Although most of my “facials” are taking place in my bathroom at the moment, I’m really excited to get professional ones once our store opens in San Francisco in October.
7:30 a.m. During the week, I get in a workout in the morning because I’m usually too tired in the evenings, and it’s so important to fit it in. Some days it’s a run; others I ride my bike or simply walk.
11 a.m. I have gotten very interested in the health benefits of intermittent fasting. On Monday, I like to start the week by waiting until 11 a.m. to have breakfast. And I take this opportunity to really focus on consuming the nutrients that provide the most benefit, the same nutrients that I have used to formulate our products: an abundance of antioxidants and essential fatty acids. In addition to doing wonders for the skin topically, they are so good for the inside of our bodies.
For example, chia seed oil is a hero ingredient in many of our products because of its high concentration of fatty acids. I love making my own chia seed pudding using chia seeds, almond milk, maple syrup, and a sprinkling of blueberries and goji berries on top for an antioxidant boost.
9 a.m. In terms of my morning beauty routine, it’s pretty quick and simple. I cleanse with just water and a warm washcloth. Then, I massage in Clear Pure Radiance Oil. Applying it on moist skin helps it penetrate. Next, I go with our Sheer Coverage SPF 20. It has just the right amount of tint. To finish, I’ll do W3ll People blush and mascara, RMS Beauty Living Luminizer along my cheekbones, and a swipe of Ilia Lip Conditioner in Arabian Nights.
2 p.m. Back on the topic of antioxidants, I routinely snack on apples. Sometimes with almond butter. I learned from Rui Hai Liu, a professor of food science at Cornell University, that apples are one of the best sources of antioxidants. These nutrients are concentrated in their peels. Rui Hai says, “The components of apple peel work together like a symphony to deliver optimal results and the highest level of antioxidants.” That’s why they are one of the longest-lasting fruits. When we discovered a patented form of apple peel, we became very excited about incorporating it into our Antioxidant Booster.
It’s a powder. You simply mix it with your serum, and it helps prevent and repair skin damage, leaving your skin brighter and firmer.
8:30 a.m. I wish that I could squeeze in a full-on sit-down meditation in the morning too, but there just isn’t enough time. Instead, I try to tap into meditative moments while I get ready for work and while I commute to and from work. This way, I arrive at work grounded. I do the same thing when I leave work so that I can be present for my family. Both places are so important to me. It is so worth trying to bring my best.
10 a.m. We recently moved our offices into San Francisco, and so now I commute by ferry into the city every day. I could take the bus, which would be a little faster, but being on the water puts me in such a good mood. I am always happy near the ocean, and I recently learned that saltwater releases negative ions, which have a positive impact on your mind.
3 p.m. I highly recommend taking a mist break. It’s the perfect pick-me-up in the middle of the afternoon. Usually around three o’clock, I take a pause and spritz on our Renew Nutrient Mist. It revives my skin and my spirit and gives me a little more energy—sort of like a shot of espresso without the caffeine crash.
