It’s easy to fake sun-kissed skin and salty waves with bronzer and a spritz of beach spray—but Tori Praver never needed to learn how. The lissome blond model was born and raised on Maui, and she spent most of her childhood surfing and exploring the island’s sandy beaches. In other words, beach beauty wasn’t a trend to be mastered—it was everyday life. After being scouted at age 13, she’s gone on to grace the pages of the buzzy Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, in addition to becoming the face of Guess clothing. These days, Praver is boss lady for her eponymous line of swimwear line, all while juggling being a mother to her daughter, Ryan, and soon-to-be mother to another bun in the oven. We caught up with the designer and talked all things beauty—from the secret to her perpetually tanned skin (it’s Nars) to her favorite scented hair oil. BYRDIE: Describe your everyday beauty routine.
TORI PRAVER: In the morning, I wash my face then moisturize with EltaMD AM Therapy ($22) and then use Beautycounter Dew Skin ($45) with some light bronzer and concealer. I don't wear much makeup during the day. In the evening, I wash my face and cleanse my skin with a mixture of witch hazel and tree oil, then moisturize with EltaMD PM Therapy ($21).
BYRDIE: What are your sun saviors?
TP: I love Coola Sunscreen Spray ($24) for my body and Eminence Sun Defense Minerals SPF 30 ($58) for my face. I have been using this for years, and it's waterproof, too! I don't use self-tanners often, but love Chocolate Sun spray tans for special occasions.
BYRDIE: You always look beach-y and bronzed—what’s your secret?
TP: I love Nars Laguna Bronzing Powder ($39)!
BYRDIE: How has your beauty routine changed since you’ve become a mother?
TP: I’m into whatever is quickest these days. I rarely do my hair unless it’s for a special event, and I don’t spend as much time picking out an outfit. I have much less time in the morning to get myself ready because I have a little human to get dressed now too!
BYRDIE: You have a successful line of swimwear. To you, a woman looks sexiest in a swimsuit when she…
TP: Feels confident!
BYRDIE: If we were to look in your fridge, we’d find…
TP: A million supplements and vitamins.
BYRDIE: What’s your healthy-eating philosophy?
TP: I think you need to be practical, but also eat foods that you know aren’t good for you—in moderation. For instance, if I had pizza for lunch, I’m not going to eat a cheeseburger and fries for dinner. I would choose something healthy, like a salad with protein to balance out the day.
BYRDIE: Your favorite on-the-go snacks:
TP: Almonds, apples, Kind bars, and almond butter on apples.
BYRDIE: Your hair is always a bright, sunny blond—what’s your haircare routine?
TP: I wash my hair every other day, and on the opposite day, I rinse my hair and condition the ends. I don’t brush my hair ever.
BYRDIE: Any products you swear by?
TP: I love Shu Uemura’s shampoo and conditioner, and always use a serum on the ends, right out of the shower—I like the new Hair Oil ($28) from Ouai. I use my fingers to gently comb through my hair and then let it air-dry. I only color my hair twice a year, but never the roots, which allows the color to grow out naturally, so I don’t have to color it often.
