As beauty editors, we get our hands on some of the most amazing products, ingredients, and information around. But sometimes we like to turn to our loyal readers and see what’s going on in their beauty world- what new skincare ingredient they’re obsessing over, which hair products they can’t live without, and most importantly which lipstick products they find themselves buying over and over. It should come as no surprise to you that we here at Byrdie are equal fans of a bold red and subtle nude lip. Turns out you are too we all have more in common than you might think- especially when it comes to lipstick, lipliner, lip gloss, and more…

MAC Lipstick ($17) in Brick-O-La
There’s no denying that 90s makeup is definitely having a moment and brick brown lipstick is one of our personal favorite resurgences. In the ‘90s we wore brick red lipstick so dark it was brown and often lined in a shade or two darker. Think Drew Barrymore in Mad Love. Today Kylie Jenner leads the charge on this trend, typically rocking a slightly warmer, fully matte look like the one this must-have MAC lipstick creates. The liner may be gone this time around but this color is still the perfect nod to flannel, slap bracelets, and the good looking cast of Party of Five.
Charlotte Tilbury ‘K.I.S.S.I.N.G’ Lipstick($32) in Nude Kate
When our editors shared their ultimate secret- the holy grail of nude lipsticks it was easily one of the most exciting beauty reveals of 2015. Ok ok maybe it wasn’t as exciting as the Met Gala Red Carpet beauty looks or the launch of Glam Glow’s cleansers but you get the point. Finding the perfect nude lipstick became slightly easier once we discovered this fleshy mauve shade from one of our favorite beauty lines. As beautiful as the model it’s named for, this lipstick with light-diffusing pigments provides a full-bodied, plump look in the most naturally chic nude tone you’ve ever seen.
MAC Lipstick ($17) in Heroine
Finding the right red lipstick for your skin tone can be tough. However, our readers with a mocha complexion took inspiration from the gorgeous Jourdan Dunn and opted to explore the darker side- of the deep purple-red variety. MAC’s signature lipstick in Heroine might seem like a hard color to pull off, but the rich purple/red-ish shade actually pops against a darker undertone giving you the desired effect of a bright statement lip with a touch of edgy and cool. What more could you really ask for?
Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick ($16) in Cranberry Cream
Finding the perfect red shade is no easy feat for girls with fair skin either- but our readers were able to find a killer option thanks to our editorial advice. Turns out cranberry-colored lips actually contrast perfectly with their fair skin, creating a look that’s both glamorous and grown-up. This Clinique lipstick with a gel formula glides on buttery-smooth, delivering the shine of a gloss in an unexpected color to create a fantastic signature look.
Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo ($30) in No. 3
We’re convinced the absolutely stunning Mika Kelly is responsible for this nude lip product becoming a Byrdie reader favorite. The actress was spotted wearing arguably the most perfect shimmery nude lip earlier this year and since finding a subtle yet flattering nude lipstick can be pretty challenging (just ask anyone who’s swiped on the wrong shade resulting in a more Walking Dead vibe) we were excited to share the exact shade with our readers.
Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil ($19)
Ever since the Olsen twins revealed the secret to their beige matte lip, this Make Up For Ever lip liner pencil been a favorite amongst Byrdie readers for obvious reasons. Whether filling in your entire lip in the natural beige 3C shade or using a more fiery hue like 8C Red to line a bright red lip, this highly pigmented pencil glides on and stays put making it is easy to shape and define the perfect pout.
Yves Saint Laurent Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain ($36)
When searching for the perfect lipstick to wear to a cocktail party, there’s lots to consider. Does it compliment your chicly crafted ensemble, will it clash with your manicure, and most importantly will it come off on my champagne glass? When we suggested this YSL gloss, with the staying power of a longwear stain, Byrdie readers took note and have been swiping it on ever since. It’s the perfect lip product to rock while sipping bubbly, talking about your upcoming holiday travel plans, or breaking down your favorite episode from this season of Empire.
Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Re-Shape & Re-Size Lip Liner ($22)
We’ve loved America Ferrera since The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants but when she turned up on the Oscar Red Carpet with a glowing complexion and an enviable nude lip, the love deepened in a major way. The lip color was Chanel but it was this Charlotte Tilbury liner, used to softly line and define the look that sealed the deal. Everyone has their own lipstick application process but a makeup artist will always remind you that liner that will not only help your lipstick last but it will also control the shape of your lips better and this rule applies to minimizing, making them appear fuller, or just plain evening them out.
