Just like all trends, popular makeup styles are cyclical in nature. In the mid-2010s, we were in the era of heavy contouring, baked concealer, and matte finishes, but today, skin-first, dewy applications flash on social media like an orb. Perhaps it’s the notion of “skincare as self-care” that’s incentivized people to refine their routines resulting in more hydrated, smoother complexions—something you’d certainly want to show off and not veil with heavy foundation. I count myself in the camp of those who fervently apply products each night in hopes of waking up dewier and more refreshed in the morning, and as such, I try to keep a light hand with my makeup and choose formulas that are “fresh” in nature so I can maintain my skin’s natural glow.

For these reasons, powder formulas don’t quite take up residency in my makeup bag. I’ll dust on a little loose powder to keep my foundation from moving throughout the day or use a powder bronzer when I need a little extra staying power, but for the most part, it’s creams and liquids all the way. That’s why when I recently got the opportunity to try PUR Beauty’s best selling 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation, I’ll admit I was hesitant. My skin is combination in nature, but errs on the drier side in the colder months. Powder foundations have a stigma for me of “settling” in fine lines or accentuating dryness and dullness—essentially the opposite of the glossy skin I crave. But after speaking with the brand’s Global Education Director, Lynnette Cole, I was introduced to the brand’s unique skin-loving formula that challenges the outdated notion of powder products being matte and flat.

PUR is truly developed with skincare-infused technology and we provide clinically proven ingredients that deliver results to the skin,” Cole tells me. “So we're not just covering you up for today… we're actually giving you the coverage, but we're also improving the skin while you wear it.” 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation is formulated with the brand’s proprietary Ceretin Complex, a blend of encapsulated retinol (for gentle, sporadic release), lactic acid, shea butter, and ceramide to both resurface the skin and repair its barrier. It’s a far cry from the pressed powders we once knew—for PUR, all-day wear isn’t solely about concealing and evening, it’s about repairing

To apply the foundation, use the brand’s chisel brush, which is where Cole tells me the magic happens. In just 60 seconds, this dense brush helps expertly apply the powder to your skin, hiding discoloration and evenly dispersing the product all along the contours of your face. And you can forget about needing concealer: 4-in-1’s medium, buildable coverage does the job of your favorite concealer product by essentially erasing dark circles, melasma, etc. The other two components of the “4-in-1” aspect include finishing powder and SPF, so with one PUR compact, you’re eliminating three other steps in your routine. We love a multi-tasking product.

PUR 4-in-1 Powder
PUR Beauty 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation $29.50

My first trial with 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation was pretty astounding. Not only did the shade LP4 perfectly match my coloring, the silky, lightweight powder acted more as a second skin than makeup—I actually forgot that I had makeup on during the day. But what excited me the most was how well it evened my skin tone while still allowing my skin’s natural radiance to shine through. Even after building on my application in finicky areas like my under-eyes and nose, the overall presentation was natural rather than cakey. My complexion also tends to get oily as the day wears on, which actually worked in my favor because it warmed up the formula and gave it a glistening effect (read: not greasy).

PUR - Lindsey Before & After

While the results were quite obvious to me, Cole tells me that I’m among the majority of happy users involved in clinical studies for the brand: 89% of participants saw an increase in skin radiance, which really speaks to the efficacy of the skin-loving ingredients packed into the formula. And 95% of participants saw a softer smoother skin texture, too—so while it is recommend to use a baseline skincare routine underneath the makeup (cleanser, toner, moisturizer) you can rest assured that the powder is hard at work improving the texture the skin from the moment you put it on until you wash it off.

Given the fact that I wear complexion makeup every single day, regardless of how busy I am, I love that 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation treats my skin on contact rather than just sitting on top of it. Plus, its ingredient list is free of harsh additives and unnecessary fillers, which makes me feel even more comfortable and confident. I never envisioned being a powder foundation fan, but with 4-in-1, it’s hard not to be.
