We’re constantly discussing the importance of hair and skincare—the ingredients you should use based on your type and texture, the helpful products we love, and the techniques recommended by experts in the industry. That said, it’s just as important to take care of your scalp, too. Think about it: It’s skin. And the health of your scalp is imperative to maintaining the health of your hair, whether you’re hoping to strengthen it, grow it, or keep it hydrated and irritation-free.
So, I decided it was time to really dig into my own scalp care routine. I picked up three of Rooted Rituals’ newest products—a strengthening tonic, scalp massager, and leave-in conditioning mask—and immediately noticed a difference. Below, find everything you need to know about each product, how to apply it, what it does, and why I love these products.
My Hair Type
I have really curly hair, but it’s also quite fine. This makes finding the right products difficult. I need hydration because my curls are prone to dryness and breakage, but I also can’t use anything too heavy (or else it’ll weigh my hair down). So, I usually find myself using a mixture of the two—both hydrating and volumizing products to work synergistically to help my hair look its best, while still maintaining the health and integrity of each strand.
My Scalp Care Concerns
Because of my product choices (offerings like dry shampoo, texturizing spray, and various hydrating masks), build-up is often an issue on my scalp. For that reason, I sought to find really great clarifying products that still strengthened my hair—and allowed for it to maintain softness and moisture, too.
This tonic is meant to strengthen your hair against damage, add shine, soothe your scalp, and moisturize from root to tip. It offers a blend of vitamin E (for shine and to fight breakage), ginger root (to strengthen and moisturize), and aloe (to soothe and cleanse impurities). To apply, section your hair into four parts and apply two to four drops along your scalp in each section. Then, massage it in with your fingertips, this part feels so cooling and nice, and style your hair as you normally would.
Now, this is a supremely luxurious product. It feels like spa-like and wonderful each time you use it. I like to use it to massage in my Cooling & Strengthening Tonic, as recommended by the brand, but you can use it with shampoo as well. It helps to really get your circulation going and increase blood flow along your scalp. This allows for stronger, healthier hair and can even lead to faster hair growth over time. Press the massager against your scalp and move it in small, circular motions throughout your head.
The mask is the last step in my scalp care routine, and the one best suited for my curls. It’s also made with the potent blend of vitamin E and ginger root, but comes in a thick, soothing, deeping hydrating cream. It adds strength, shine, and smells absolutely lovely for hours after you apply it. I’ll even use it in lieu of a conditioner after the shower. Just smooth it evenly on damp hair, leave it in, and let it dry naturally.
The Bottom Line
Scalp care is just as important as your skin or regular hair care routine. In fact, because it’s been neglected for so long (as least mine has), it’s importance is paramount. And I know what you’re thinking: I have to spend money on more products? But, Rooted Rituals offers effective products at a really accessible price point (for $9.97!). So, yes, I recommend it wholeheartedly. It’s the perfect ritual to help my scalp stay healthy, my hair look great, and, let’s be real, it’s relaxing too.
