Skincare PSA: K-Beauty inspired skincare brand Then I Met You is launching two totally new products today—an essence and toner—and we've got all the details.
For those unfamiliar with the line, Then I Met You launched just last year, and until now they've only released two products: The Cleansing Duo, comprised of Living Cleansing Balm ($38) and Soothing Tea Cleansing Gel ($36). And they've been cult-favorites ever since. The aforementioned Living Cleansing Balm, a butter-like oil-based cleanser that's chock full of antioxidants, won our very own Byrdie Skin Care Award for best cleansing balm in 2019. We're such big fans of brand's founder, author, esthetician, Korean beauty expert and co-founder of K-beauty e-tailer Soko Glam, Charlotte Cho, that we also made her one of our guest judges.
Meet the Expert
Charlotte Cho is a licensed esthetician and the co-founder and chief curator of the e-commerce sight Soko Glam. Cho also recently founded a K-Beauty-inspired premium skincare line, Then I Met You.
Today, the brand is introducing another product duo: The Skin Balancing Duo, which includes Birch Milk Refining Toner ($32) and The Giving Essence ($50). As is the case with the previous product duo, you don't have to purchase them both as a set—although you can, for $78.
The quality and combination of ingredients has always been a hallmark for Cho (she is a Korean beauty expert, after all), and the new essence and toner are no different. First up: The Birch Milk Refining Toner. As its name implies, this toner is formulated with a "milky base" of more than 70% birch juice, squalene, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, plus a 1% AHA + PHA mixture of glycolic acid, lactic acid and gluconolacctone. This combination of exfoliating and moisturizing ingredients is designed to be both gentle (to hydrate and prep the skin) and refining (tightening pores and controlling breakouts, plus helping to smooth out fine lines) on the skin. Since it is so gentle, it can be used both morning and evening, every day.
"Within 4 weeks of daily use, I have personally seen my routine hormonal acne disappear while using the Birch Milk Refining Toner," Cho tells us. "Using the right balance of gentle exfoliants has allowed my skin to reduce breakouts in a healthy way, instead of finding a harsh, overnight solution."
Rounding out the duo is The Giving Essence, which is all about antioxidants and hydration. In addition to free radical-fighting natural ingredients like black chokeberries and red algae, this toner contains ultra-hydrating polyglutamic acid (PA). If you haven't heard of PA before, here's the deal: Typically derived from fermented soy beans, it's a polymer of amino acids that's said to be extremely moisturizing—even more so than hyaluronic acid. According to cosmetic chemist Ginger King, PA can hold up to ten times more moisture than hyaluronic acid can (!!!), and in addition to hydration, it can also offer smoothing benefits to your skin. We'll take all of the above, please.
"PA is a great hydrator," confirms NYC-based dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, of Goldenberg Dermatology. "Any patient with dry or irritated skin, [or] a patient with a cosmetic concern such as wrinkles and lines, can benefit from this powerful product."
Then I Met You's Giving Essence and Birch Milk Refining Toner is available starting today on the brand's website, thenimetyou.com.
