I’m a lip girl through and through, but admittedly, I’ve been stuck in a rut. My lip combos usually involve a pencil and a matte lipstick (the more matte, the better), and I steer clear of lip products with shine. Looking to change things up, I wanted to check out the viral Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm from Tarte. I'm usually disinterested in viral products and hacks, but as a fan of the brand, I decided to give the lip balm a try. Want to know what the product is like and if it’s worth the virality? Keep reading for my honest review.

About My Lips: Dry and always in need of more moisture

My lips are relentlessly dry, and it’s challenging for me to keep them hydrated. I keep several different lip balms with me at all times and apply them throughout the day. Though I use a few different products, my favorites are Smith’s Rosebud Salve and ILIA Beauty’s Lip Wrap Overnight Treatment. When I’m going out, I stick to matte or satin lipsticks, and my favorites are from MAC Cosmetics and Rare Beauty. Ready to make a change, I was looking forward to testing out the Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm and seeing how comfortable I felt with a glossy lip product on.

How to Apply: Build as desired

The Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm has buildable coverage; depending on the type of look you’re going for, you can use one layer of product for a sheer look or several layers for a pigmented look. The product comes with a non-retractable clicker that dispenses small amounts of product per click. If you’d like a thin layer of product all you need is one click; if you’d like more color, three or four will do the trick.

The Results: Hydrated, shiny lips that look fuller

As a lipstick lover, I prefer to sport a bold matte lip over just about everything else—but this product may have swayed me a little. The Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm is lovely; it gave my lips intense moisture and lots of shine and made them appear fuller and, well, juicy.

With several nourishing and natural ingredients like goji, acai, pomegranate, watermelon, vitamin E, and, of course, the product’s namesake maracuja oil, the Juicy Lip Balm gave my lips tons—and I do mean tons—of moisture. As soon as I would put it on, it softened my lips instantly, and the hydration, pigment, and shine were maintained for a few hours before needing reapplication.

Even though I loved using the Juicy Lip Balm, I would have liked to have gotten a little more coverage, but that’s because I prefer full-coverage matte lip looks. The lip balm layers well, and the pigment is visible, but it obviously isn't as vibrant as satin or matte lipstick. Overall, this is a minor critique when I take into account how much I enjoyed the product. For someone who doesn’t like shiny lip products that much, I loved this one. And what’s even better is that it actually lives up to the hype.

The Value: Pricier, but worth it

Priced at about $24, the Juicy Lip Balm is more expensive than your traditional lip balm, but it moisturizes, plumps, and adds color like sheer lipstick, which makes it well worth the price. Plus, Tarte is known for relying heavily on vegan formulations and sustainably-sourced ingredients, which tend to be costlier.

Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Color Balm: We all know about Clinique’s Black Honey, but have you heard of the Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Color Balm ($21)? Shaped like a crayon, this balm moisturizes lips and gives them a soft tint. If you want something that’s a little glossier, Tarte is the way to go.

Final Verdict

Testing out the Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm from Tarte was an unexpected success. As a person that’s not a huge fan of glosses, my lips felt comfortable and had tons of shine without any stickiness. Since this balm lasted as long as some of my favorite lipsticks, it now has a permanent spot in my makeup bag.
