Have you ever skipped a workout in fear of sweating out your freshly styled hair? You’re not the only one. According to a study by Jama Network in 2013, nearly 40% of Black women avoided exercise due to concerns about ruining their hairstyles, and 36% skipped water activities altogether.
As you can imagine, this poses quite a dilemma for anyone who wants to maintain a fitness regimen while also maintaining the integrity of their style (and therefore not overspending at the salon).
Thankfully, a Black-owned haircare brand has made it their mission to tackle the workout-hair conundrum so we no longer have to choose between a good style and our physical health.
Let us introduce you to Sunday II Sunday, a haircare brand created for active women that provides quality products to cleanse and refresh textured hair pre- and post-workout. The minimalist black and ivory bottles have straightforward names like Root Refresh, Revive Me, and Edge Flourish so you know exactly what the product is helping you achieve.
Our products are designed to clean and refresh hair between washes, allowing women to get from one wash day to the next, or from Sunday to Sunday.
“Women compromising their health and enjoyment because of their hair was simply something I had to help solve,” Sunday II Sunday owner Keenan Beasley tells Byrdie. “I truly feel that nothing should hold anyone back from living their life to the fullest. We believe life is an adventure and [women] shouldn’t have to compromise because of their hair.”
Since its launch in June 2020, the beauty company has already won over their customers. “We receive DMs, emails, and shoutouts on social from women who are advocating for us because the product is needed and is working for them. It’s a great feeling,” says Beasley. “Our products are designed to clean and refresh hair between washes, allowing women to get from one wash day to the next, or from Sunday to Sunday, without fear of ruining their hairstyles.”
Despite being a fairly new small business, Sunday II Sunday is making major waves, having recently received an undisclosed seven-figure investment from Johnson & Johnson Innovation JJDC, Inc.
With this major investment, Beasley says Sunday II Sunday will not only be ramping up their inventory of best-in-class products, but it will also be expanding their team and offering lower prices.
Sunday II Sunday will also be focusing on expanding its direct-to-consumer reach. Beginning on May 25, all of the brand’s products will be available on Sephora’s website.
“For us, this partnership is so exciting because it means that we will be able to reach even more women with solutions to empower them to lead their fullest and most active lives without worrying about how it will affect their hair,” Keenan Beasley, CEO, and Founder of Sunday II Sunday said in a press release. “We’re excited to work with a brand like Sephora that recognizes the need behind these products and blurring the lines between health and beauty.”
If you’re curious where to start with Sunday II Sunday's product lineup, Beasley recommends the Revive Me Daily Moisturizing Spray ($31). “It’s lightweight and refreshes/revives your curls throughout the week while keeping your hair moisturized, soft, and shiny. It’s a great frizz fighter and keeps your scalp healthy by reducing inflammation and itch caused by dryness.”
