7 Products I'm Using to Combat the Effects of Day Drinking

Memorial Day weekend kicked off the unofficial start of summer—and, since then, I've been fully embracing the season. Like many of us, my social calendar over the next few months is bedecked with bachelorettes, birthdays, BBQs, and the like. Already, the debauchery—namely day drinking and spending too much time in the sun—has taken its toll on my skin. Even though I'm an avid sunscreen-wearer and do my best to stay hydrated in the heat, my pared-back skincare routine is not enough to stand up to the challenges of the season.

With boozy picnics, day trips to the beach, and outdoor beer gardens punctuating most weekends, summer serves up a cocktail of no-nos for your skin: sun, alcohol, unhealthy food, and lack of sleep. To save my skin from the upcoming influx of bad-skin day triggers (or, what I like to call "hangover skin"), I need to buckle down on my summer skincare. Beyond making more of a commitment to minimize my time in the sun, double-up on water consumption, and not let healthy eating habits go out the window at parties and picnics, I'm leaning into a lineup of products designed to combat the effects of day drinking and everything that comes with it. Here are the seven products I'm using to cure hangover skin (and hair) in the summer.

1. Under-Eye Patches

Peace Out Puffy Under-Eye Patches $25

My eyes are the first to give away the tell-tale signs of sleep deprivation (not to mention alcohol-induced puffiness). Bid adieu to all the above with this pack of bio-cellulose under-eye patches that de-puff, tackle dark circles, and alleviate dryness. Antioxidant-rich passion fruit extract and ice plant stem cells do their magic to make you look worlds more awake and refreshes in a matter of minutes.

2. Anti-Redness Serum

Ren Clean Skincare Evercalm Anti-Redness Serum $50

Between blemishes and sunburns, red seems to be the color of the season—but I'd like that to change. My already sensitive skin is super prone to irritations in the summer heat (and subsequent sweat fest), so a serum that combats redness is a godsend. I keep this serum in the fridge to multiply its refreshing factor. In addition to addressing visual imperfections by soothing redness and inflammation, this product also acts as a preventive measure by supporting the skin's natural tolerance against environmental aggressors like UV rays, pollution, and free radicals.

3. Hair Sheets

Ouai Anti-Frizz Hair Sheets $18

I have naturally wavy hair that tries its best to be curly anytime humidity hits. It's also quick to get frizzy if ever the elements don't perfectly align, and I'm not one to spend too much time styling it, especially in summer. To tame the mess I often find my mane in this time of year, my secret weapon is this pack of frizz-eliminating sheets. The portable pack is perfect for weekend trips to combat frizz, tame flyaways, and leave hair shiny and smooth while on the go.

4. Protective Oil for Hair

Klorane Sun Radiance Protective Oil with Ylang-Ylang Wax $18

We don’t always consider hair as part of our sun defense regimen, but it too takes a beating during the summer if we don’t keep it protected. Whenever I'm going to be in outdoors in the sun for an extended period of time, I like to spray my hair with a protective oil. This lightweight and waterproof option made from ylang-ylang wax shields hair against the trifecta of damaging effects of summer (read: UV rays, salt, and chlorine).

5. After-Sun Cooling Gel

Korres After Sun Greek Yoghurt Cooling Gel for Face and Body $26

Keeping cool during the summer doesn't come easy. This after-sun cooling gel made with real Greek yogurt has earned rave reviews. After a day in the sun, cool and soothe irritated, red, or dry skin on the face and body with this clean formula that relieves lingering heat while providing a much-needed dose of hydration. Keep in the refrigerator to maximize its cooling properties.

6. Ice Roller

Stackedskincare Ice Roller $30

For an even more intense way to keep cool this summer, an ice roller does the trick. Fight hangover skin the morning after with this stainless steel barrel roller that alleviates puffiness, reduces inflammation and redness, and soothes and calms irritated skin. Just store in your freezer for an instant ice-cold pick-me-up whenever your skin most needs it.

7. Face Mask

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask $48

After all is said and done, a multitasking mask can be like Pedialyte for your face. This cult favorite was designed to save skin from jet lag so is perfect for trouble complexions of the hangover variety. Stressed-out, over-worked skin gets served up a nourishing blend of vitamins, antioxidants, ceramides, and gently-exfoliating extracts that reverse dryness and dullness. Say goodbye to hangover skin and unveil your real summer glow.
