The Drugstore Products to Buy This Summer, According to Top Vloggers

Kaitlyn McLintock

From Michelle Phan and her eponymous empire to the lauded Jaclyn Hill x Becca collaboration, YouTube vloggers have a history of maturing into full-fledged beauty royalty. Their community has grown so much that they even have their own annual convention, Beautycon, where viewers can meet their favorite vloggers IRL and learn about what’s new and awesome in their world.

It’s no wonder vloggers have become such a force in the beauty industry: Not only is YouTube the perfect platform for watching addictive makeup transformations, but it’s also a place to turn to before conquering your local beauty supply store—the drugstore in particular. We’ve all been there, right? You peruse the aisle for what feels like hours, looking for a budget-friendly foundation or brow pencil, just to take it home and immediately feel disappointed. If only you could swatch! Why, drugstores, why?!

To avoid any beauty misses this summer, we’ve rounded up top-notch drugstore makeup products using suggestions from some of YouTube’s best. Read on for your new (affordable) makeup routine!

A sequel to its older sister, the Pro-Matte Foundation (13), L’Oréal’s Infallible ProGlow Foundation ($13) comes highly recommended by Jeffree Star. The foundation works to make your skin look instantly bright and healthy, not at all dull or cakey. “Full-coverage foundation and a glow? Sign me up,” says Star. Vlogger Rose Kimberly is also in love with the product.

Look at any drugstore makeup tutorial on YouTube and chances are that the vlogger is wearing Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer ($9). First, the applicator is pillowy soft and user-friendly. Plus, the formula contains ingredients to diminish dark circles and puffiness. Vlogger Michelle Reed says, “I’ve tried other concealers, and I honestly just don’t like anything as much as this.”

I’m just going to come out and say it: Bronzer may be my number one summer must-have. It’s the secret to creating a chiseled, sun-kissed effect in a snap, and this Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer ($15) is nicely pigmented without being over-the-top. Beauty vlogger Kaushal is also a fan. “It gives a really beautiful, natural glow to your skin,” she says.

Although this product isn’t technically sold as a highlighter, UK brand Kiko Cosmetics’ Water Eyeshadow in 208 ($14) lights up your skin like highlighting products five times the price. We got the recommendation from Tati Westbrook, who says, “It is gorgeous. Just a beautiful, beautiful highlight. It’s like the highlighter that dreams are made of.”

Brow Pencil

A good brow product is invaluable—it’s crazy how a couple of hair-like strokes can take your look from meh to omg. After all, brows are responsible for framing the face. This L’Oréal Brow Stylist Definer ($9) is all over YouTube. Just look to beauty vlogger Juicyyyyjas. “It’s so easy to work with, and I love how tiny the tip is because it really helps me to get in there and fill in my brows perfectly,” she says. “I really have been loving how my brows have been looking just with this pencil.”

In this video, vlogger Zoella uses the Nyx Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Sandstorm ($7). These are great, non-drying, easy-to-apply lippies—but I’m going to vouch for all of Nyx’s liquid lipstick formulas, including the slam-dunk Soft Matte Lip Cream ($6). There hasn’t been a single bad apple in the bunch. (Special shout-out to the shade Antwerp, which is a beautiful, summery coral.)
