Summer in New York is a double-edged sword. You spend so much time longing for it during the winter months (and during the seasons we used to refer to as fall and spring but now call "pre-winter" and "post-winter"), yet once it arrives, it suddenly feels fleeting. Rooftop parties, outside seating, and tiki drinks are the best memories I have of summer here, followed closely by the realization that it's so humid you can begin to sweat it places you didn't know had glands.
That being said, there will always be a fondness for New York summers in my mind and heart, and as such, a reason to have some fun with beauty products once the temperatures rise. We asked a few New York ladies what their favorite summer beauty products are and why. Keep reading for the product purchases you'll inevitably make before September rolls around.
"I make everyone I know buy this moisturizer because it's so light, smells amazing, and you'd never guess it's SPF 45." — Nicole
"To be honest, I use this in any season, but I especially love my CT Gold Bar Highlighter in the summer because it perfectly complements my tanned skin and gives my face an extra next-level glow." — Nicole
"The allure of Biologique Recherche, a mysterious skincare brand beloved by so many influential women (especially in New York) was almost lost on me, as there's not a ton of explanation on the internet and it's infamously difficult to procure. I would forget about it for months until another low-key, glowy-skinned individual touted it as her secret weapon. What even is this? I've thought to myself many, many times. But here's the thing, one application will demonstrate exactly how incredible this toner is for your skin.
It's a blend of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and citric acid and keeps breakouts at bay, pores smooth, and your skin's texture super even." — Hallie
"Dr. Barbara Sturm's Anti-Pollution Drops is an antioxidant-based serum practically made for New Yorkers—formulated to protect your skin from 'environmental stressors,' which basically means smog, smoke, exhaust, you name it. Plus, it helps keep your skin safe from the blue light radiation emitted from computers and phones." — Hallie
"Volar's calming body essence is my go-to when I'm feeling the stress of New York City in my bones. I take a long, luxurious shower, turn on some music, and lather my body in the stuff. It's made from lavender, peppermint, and patchouli essential oils and very literally keeps your body tingling for well after application. It's good vibes, through and through." — Hallie
"This is one of the coolest new summer products, IMHO, and I haven't put it down since I first opened the package. The formula is matte but moisturizing and allows for that whole barely there Popsicle-stain thing. The formula is 77% water-based, buildable, customizable, and fade-proof. There's nothing better on a super-hot, humid day when you just can't." — Hallie
"I first tried this blend of probiotics when I was doing Sakara Life's Detox and promptly fell in love with them. The supplements offer a professional-grade daily probiotic to promotes healthy digestion, raise your energy levels, balance your hormones, help with stress, and manage weight, reduce inflammation, and relieve bloat. So, yeah, they rule." — Hallie
"Trish McEvoy Lash Curling Mascara is tubular, doesn't smudge, flake, run, or 'raccoon.' I only need water to take the tubes right off. It's SO easy and meant for real life. I've converted everyone I know." — @hmbeard
"Erno Laszlo White Marble Dual Phase Vitamin C Peel—it blows everything else out of the water. It smoothes my skin and removes all uneven texture, smells delicious, and feels tingly and wonderful. It needs to be talked about more!" — @gabriellaloren
"I'm freshly obsessed with Glossier Cloud Paint's newest shades: Storm and Dawn. Feel free to call me a hypebeast when it comes to this cream-based blush. I love that all it takes is a tap of my finger to apply and seamlessly blend this right onto my skin. It's also lightweight enough to layer on top of powder or foundation without that cakey look. Dawn has a warm, golden effect on my skin that catches the light so beautifully. Storm is a cherry tone that gives my cheeks this nice flush. I'll gladly be flicking it up while wearing this blush all summer—you've been warned." — Maya
"My Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist is a definite must-have beauty product to keep me refreshed and luminous throughout the day. I keep the travel size on me so that it's easy to transport." — @moodsandviews
"I can't live without Caudalie's Vine[Activ] 3-in-1 Moisturizer. It's perfect for living in NYC because the ingredients in it help fight pollution (which ages your skin so radically). I'm always searching for products that counteract pollution." — @skincarediaries_
"I'm a New Yorker and I got Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream for Christmas. I truly can't live without it. It's super expensive, but I put it on before a night out or when I want to feel special, and my skin becomes plump, my acne swelling goes down, and it looks like I put a subtle highlight all over my face. Despite the price, I LOVE IT." — @pippersfinsta
"This new self-tanning brand is on everyone's lips in NYC, and for good reason. Celebrity tanner Jules Von Hep (he does everyone from Blake Lively to Sienna Miller) created this brand-new line with a color-correcting technology that adjusts based on your skin tone so that you get a natural-looking, even tan, no matter what your undertones are. I was thoroughly impressed with how even, golden, and streak-free my tan looked when I used the medium shade—not even a hint of orange in sight. People keep asking me about this line, and now that I've tried it, I'll tell them it's worth every penny." — Faith
"I'm newly obsessed with this Japanese makeup brand called Decorté—more specifically, its Sheer Brilliance Soft Lifting Tint. It gives the perfect amount of barely there coverage while still making my skin look 10 times better and, more importantly, doesn't melt off or make me look greasy in the muggy NYC summer heat. I've been telling everyone I know about this under-the-radar brand." — Faith
