It’s time to give your pastel polishes a rest—there’s a whole new set of electric colors to try this summer. We spoke with celeb manicurist, Carla Kay (she’s painted the digits of everyone from Kate Beckinsale to Lily Aldridge), and asked her to name the top summer color and texture trends for summer. Not that we really need another reason to grow our already-expansive nail polish collection, but, you know.

“I’m seeing a lot of blue [when it comes to color trends] this summer,” Kay says. “One of my go-to blues is by Jin Soon, called Blue Iris ($18)—it’s a deep electric blue, a really strong and bold shade.”

“For the less bold, nudes and soft pinks are still trending,” Kay says. “Chanel has a beautiful, soft pink called Ballerina ($27).”

“Right now, there are these temporary tattoos called Flash Tattoos,” Kay says. “I’m obsessed! They come in gold and silver metallic patterns that you can cut down and use on your nails.” She says to apply them to your nails as you would to your skin—just place it on your nail, put a wet cloth on top, wait a few seconds, then remove. “It’s nail art in seconds—so easy!” she says.
“I think textured nails are still trending during the summer, but in the warmer months I like to keep it simple and only do one or two fingers on each hand,” Kay says. “That way, it’s not overdone or too heavy.” She recommends Ciaté’s line of simple DIY kits—the Shell Manicure ($25) is perfect for summer!
