While we might be happy enough slipping into our cashmere jumpers, lighting our best scented candles and hunkering down for winter, we're still reveling in the magic that was the spring/summer 2018 shows, and it's got us thinking that a little bit of hair and makeup experimentation could be exactly the thing we need to brighten up these grey days.

This season, the world's most revered beauty experts took to their proverbial stage (read: cramped, dark backstage space) to create some of the most incredible beauty trends we've ever seen. And while these are the looks intended to be worn next season, along with our floaty dresses and Céline sunglasses, they're too good (and surprisingly wearable) to file away until then.

So get out your makeup bag and brush off your hair tools—from oil-slick eyes to crystal encrusted everything via the most delicious (yes, really) updos we've ever encountered, keep scrolling for your spring/summer 2018 beauty cheat sheet. We'll see you in front of the mirror.

MISSED-A-BIT LIPS

You might have mastered the art of precise lipstick application and possess the ability to apply any bullet blindfolded, without even the faintest wisp of a mishap. But this new lip trend dictates that actually it's okay to miss a bit. In fact, you could miss a whole lip if you wanted, and it would still look cool as per the Concept Korea show. Or try leaving a channel down the centre of the mouth bare. Why? Well, just because you can.

BAKE OFF BUNS

The Great British Bake Off may be over for yet another year, but the hair world is only just brushing off their aprons and fashioning updos reminiscent of the contents of a Parisian bakery. Think croissant-shaped chignons, cinnamon-bun topknots and glossy pecan plaits.

THE SURREALISTS

Consider this trend the eyeliner equivalent of those Picasso-inspired face earrings everyone has been wearing this year. Rather than lashline-hugging cat eye flicks, the new way to wear liquid eyeliner is with pure whimsy and abandon—encircle eyes in almond-shaped rings or take inspiration from the stock exchange and draw on the sort of fluctuating lines you see on a financial chart.

HOT FLUSHES

With the ability to brighten a complexion and awaken tired eyes like nothing else, it's only right that blusher breaks free from the shackles of its traditional apple-of-the-cheek placement and instead, travel up to the eyes and along the cheekbones. And don't play it safe with the shade either: Opt for a poppy fuchsia or electric neon pink.

CRYSTAL HEALING

Crystals aren't just for cleansing your aura, FYI, but also make a brilliant accessory for your under eyes, hair parting and Cupid's bow. The key here is to keep everything else pretty understated—think dewy skin, mascara-less eyes and nude lips—and the additional sparkling Swarovskis won't start to look OTT.

PETROL SPILL

Eye shadow is having somewhat of a renaissance, which is particularly good news for our old friend the smoky eye. Instead of the bog-standard charcoal grey, slightly pearlescent petrol-tones make the whole thing feel far more modern. Just place in controlled areas, like a little smudge under the lower lashline or tucked into the outer corner of the eye.

THE BRIDESMAID HAIR

If you're getting married next year or know someone who is, bookmark this now. At Rodarte, the models' hair may have been left loose and disheveled, but the addition of a cluster of ethereal white flowers brought the impact. It's the sort of thing that would look amazing on an entire bridal party.

THE JEWEL-ENCRUSTED PARTING

Oh, Sam McKnight, how you can do no wrong. At Dries Van Noten, the iconic hairstylist pulled hair into a severe side parting before lining the scalp with a row of neatly placed crystals. It's kinda like a bedazzle, but it's just for the scalp, and it's way, way cooler.

THE TIE-DYE NAILS

Manish Arora is always the show we look to for an amazing manicure to add to our bank of nail art inspiration, and we're filing this season's look under need to try, stat. Nail expert and all-around manicure expert, Marian Newman painted these psychedelic marbled patterns across the nail. Yep, it's a dead cert, that would take a hell of a lot of practice to nail at home, but the effect makes it more than worth it.

THE RODEO MULLET

With a textured quiff and awkward left-behind lengths, this look is unashamedly '80s, and we love it. If a mullet isn't quite your bag, try creating the quiff, using Hair by Sam McKnight Easy-Up Do (£25) to add extra texture and height, but pin the rest of the hair into a low knotted bun.

THE KISSING LIPS

Acid-bright lipstick anchored faces at Maison Martin Margiela, but rather than a straight-forward lip, Pat McGrath painted the lipstick on in these heart shapes that gave the impression of two sets of lips kissing. The easiest way to re-create this is to apply lipstick across the entire lip and use a lip brush dipped in makeup remover to take away the central section.

THE CAUGHT-IN-THE-SUN FLUSH

Of course, we'd never recommend forgoing SPF whether you're sunning yourself on the beach or heading to work in a cloudy UK city. But the makeup look at DSquared2 is making a pretty firm case for faking a little time in the sun. Backstage at DSquared, the makeup artists went heavy on the bronzer, shading the models' faces where the sun usually hits down the temples and across cheekbones. The result was oddly radiant, and better still, it didn't require a speck of sun damage.

THE PAINTBOX NAILS

You know that feeling in the nail salon when you just can't decide what colour polish to pick? Well, take the advice of the nail artists backstage at Au Jour Le Jour and pick them all. Blocks of poppy brights were painted adjacent to stripes of pastel shades. If nothing else, this fun manicure was a welcome reprieve from a run of shows that featured nude nail after nude nail.

THE SILVER LININGS

Having seen it everywhere at the London shows, we've been pasting Charlotte Tilbury's Hollywood Beauty Light Wand over our entire faces. But in Milan, the Dolce & Gabbana show threw up a far more considered approach to highlighting: silver linings. The inner corners of eyes were lined with a metallic highlighter that seemed to make eyes a little bit sparklier, while the wine-toned lips sat under a halo of light, as the Cupid's bow was traced with a pearlescent highlighter. Darker skin tones would benefit from a more golden highlighter to match the warmth of the skin.

THE '90S-ANGST FRINGE

We all have a school picture that mildly resembles this very hairstyle. You know, that super-long fringe, straightened to within an inch of its life and then so carefully pulled down over a single eye. It might say (or scream) teenage angst, but somehow through a matured lense, it also feels pretty chic. We'd probably tone it down and use a smaller section of hair for the “fringe,” though.

THE RIPCURL EYE SHADOW

In keeping with House of Holland's pirate-themed show, The Body Shop makeup ambassador Ciara O'Shea painted eye shadow in the same shape as a breaking wave. For the most vibrant colour payoff (especially on darker skin), use a white eyeliner to sketch and fill in the shape you want before going in with your colour on top.

THE NEXT-LEVEL HIGHLIGHTING

There we were thinking that highlighter was supposed to be subtle, a mere whisper of shine reminiscent of that post-spin glow at most. Turns out we were wrong, as proven by the kilowatt highlighter that makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury washed across the models' cheekbones, Cupid's bow, forehead and nose at Temperley. Using Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand (£29) and teamed with Pillarbox-red lipstick, the result was nothing less than luminescent.

THE PRIM AND PROPER HAIR

Now, Truly Scrumptious is a name we hadn't heard for a while (not since we last watched circa '97), but she's about to become our hair inspiration for spring 2018. That's exactly who hair wizard Sam McKnight had in mind when designing this glossy updo backstage at Ryan Lo. For us, that means it's time to stock up on pink ribbon and reignite our glossy blow-dry habit.

THE PETROL-STAINED EYE

Lying somewhere between an emerald green and a peacock blue, this shimmery eye shadow is pretty enough. But when makeup artist Lynsey Alexander layered it with Topshop Beauty Chameleon Glow in U-Turn (£10), it created that very same prism of colours you'd find in a puddle of petrol. Oh, and there was an equally incredible pink colourway too. We're obsessed.

THE GRASS-GREEN NAIL

Khaki, perhaps, but otherwise, green isn't usually the first colour we reach for when picking a bottle of polish at the beginning of a mani appointment. But since seeing Roksanda's grass-green manicure, we're having second thoughts. Not only is it eye-catching, but we love the heavy black line that ringed every single nail. This is nail art at its chicest.

THE CRYSTAL-ENCRUSTED EYE

Anyone still being haunted by this summer's glitter trend (that stuff gets everywhere) will be pleased to know that for next season, glitter has found its grown-up side. Rather than chunky flecks, it's all about carefully placed crystals, as so elegantly demonstrated by the models at Jeremy Scott. We'll be pairing this look down by applying just a solitary sequin in the inner corner of the eye.

THE STATEMENT BOTTOM LIP

In the (slightly misquoted) words of Drake, started from the bottom, then we stopped. Well, that was the impression we got of the makeup look at Concept Korea, where a punchy fuchsia lipstick was applied to the bottom lip and the bottom lip only. It's the sort of beauty look that makes you do a double take, and that's exactly the kind we like. Into it.

THE NEW LOGO TEE

If you're tired of wearing your favourite brand emblazoned across your chest, then you're in luck. The new way to rock a logo is on your nails, as proven by this pretty major nail art look from Helmut Lang. You don't even need to have a steady hand to re-create it—we’ve found a genius shortcut in these letter transfers from Amazon.

THE SCRUNCHIE REVIVAL

Scrunchies have been desperately trying to poke their ruffles back into the cool zone for a few seasons now, but it seems for spring 2018, they might have just done it. Wrap one around a loose pony, and weirdly enough they look less '90s mum and more modern-day sophistication. Still not sure? Let these scrunchie-wearing Instagrammers convince you.

THE RETURN OF PURPLE

Set to make a comeback this season is an old friend we thought we left in the early noughties: purple eye shadow. But thankfully, it's taken on a modern—and ultimately more wearable—guise. Rather than old-fashioned lilacs and wishy-washy lavender, the new way to wear purple is warm shades of amethyst applied in controlled areas across the eyelid.

Next up, we talk you through the easiest way to try the metallic makeup trend.
