Bored of the grey, gloomy days? We hear you. Which is why, on the first official day of spring, we're bringing you our rundown of the shiny new spring/summer 2017 beauty trends to try now. It's time to hit refresh on your hair and makeup looks and start incorporating some brilliant new spring buys into your arsenal. Not every new trend is going to float your beauty boat, but we can guarantee a couple most certainly will. And what's so brilliant about beauty is that you can take a trend and wear it your way.

Love the idea of orange eye shadow but don't want to resemble the guy from the '90s Tango adverts? Then try re-creating the rust incarnation at Topshop instead. Obsessed with the new-look surfer hairstyle but not in the market for a haircut? Wear the texture in your longer lengths. Trends are there to be played with, and rules are most definitely made to be broken. Keep scrolling for spring/summer 2017's biggest beauty trends that you can totally start wearing now.

Summer SMOKE

If the smoky eye look is your go-to, then this is the S/S 17 beauty trend for you. Whether you love graphite black, slate grey or chocolate brown, simply take a crayon or creamy eye shadow and work it along the upper and lower lash lines. Use a brush or your fingers to blend out. How far you smudge this look is up to you.

The Accent Braid

Braids can look young, there's no denying that, but one way to incorporate one into your look is to use it as an accent. Essentially this is a small braid placed with into a ponytail or bun, or subtly peeking out from under your hair like at Roberto Cavalli. During summer or for festivals, try using Bleach London Hair Crayons (£4) to add a flash of colour.

The Surfer Crop

When you think beachy hair, you envisage a surfer girl with long, flowing hair, but not this season. At Alexander Wang and Francesco Scognamiglio, the hairstylists showed how this piecey texture looks totally modern worked into a lob or even a shorter bob. In naturally wavy hair, use a lightweight wave-creating foam to eke out the texture. Got fine hair and need more volume at the roots and texture throughout? Use a hair powder. For straight hair, use a wand to randomly tong sections in different directions to create that messy wave.

'80s Revival

There were two '80s looks: the wholesome gorgeous supermodel beauty, all big brows and tonal bronze makeup; and the bright colorful contouring and bold lips that helped the new romantics set themselves apart. The latter is making a comeback. We know it's not that wearable if you're thinking too literally. But a wash of sheer blush worn just along the cheekbone or a pop of bold fuchsia lipstick looks modern and fresh, and it also enables you to nod to this '80s revival trend without looking like you're doing your best Boy George impression.

Sporty Skin

Sporty skin or, as it was referred to backstage at some shows, sweaty skin, is the complexion du jour for next season. But how does a sweaty complexion translate into real life? Because no one wants to look like they've just finished a HIIT session. In the wondrously bizarre world of catwalk beauty, sweaty skin actually just means sheeny skin. But this season it's all about matte, sheeny, sweaty-looking skin. We're talking a matte, velvet complexion with a powdered highlight. And that's the key: You should use powder highlighter not liquid or cream to re-create this finish.

Buff into the high points of the face: cheekbones, cupid's bow, bridge of the nose and a little on the chin and forehead. It will make you look like you've had a facial, or run around the block a couple of times and have that exerciser's high.

Pin-Straight Hair

Sure we haven't seen much of Kim Kardashian West of late but she's still capable of pushing a beauty trend into the limelight. A handful of shows sent models out onto the catwalk with pin-straight hair, but it's thanks to KKW that we're all hankering after longer, sleeker hair. Expect to see influencers cluttering your Instagram feed with Rapunzel-esque hair pics this year.

The key to getting this look right is a great pair of straighteners (Ghd is our go-to) and plenty of shine spray and oil or serum. To really nail this, look extensions should play a part, too.

all that glitters

Glitter isn't just for Christmas or festivals. This spring, accents of glitter can be worn to embellish lips, nails and even ears (yep, you read that right). Where you would traditionally apply a clear gloss over lipstick to fake a plumper pout, dab on fine glitter particles in a similar shade to your lipstick hue. At Rodarte, glitter polish was traced around the edges of nails, while at Giamba, glitter was painted onto ears using body glue for a fun and totally inspired take on the trend.

A couple of years ago, had I suggested wearing orange eye shadow a lot of people would have said no way. But with more and more celebrities wearing rust-hued eye colors on the red carpet, the thought of an orange eye shadow doesn't seem so far flung. Ease yourself into the look by mimicking the warm copper eyes at Topshop Unique, and then try the satsuma-hued eyes at Blugirl on holiday with a tan. The key to keeping it looking effortless is to really blend and buff the edges and keep the rest of your face clean—just a little mascara to add definition to your eyes.
