Spring break is one of our favorite weeks of the year. It’s the time when you swap studying for friends, lazing about, and, if you’re lucky, beaches. It also means that second semester is almost over and warm weather is on the horizon. Whether you’re traveling somewhere tropical or just chilling at home, these are our spring break beauty essentials that will keep your skin and hair looking good all week long. Keep scrolling to see our picks!
First things first: Sunscreen is probably the most important item on this list. Those of us who start turning into a tomato within minutes of being exposed to the sun know how important sunscreen is, but even if you have skin that does get tan, you’ll need it too—not all sun damage can immediately be seen. A sunburn isn’t cute, and either is premature aging. Our top drugstore pick is Aveeno’s Protect + Hydration Lotion Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($10), since it protects your skin without leaving an oily residue and is water and sweat-resistant. If you have a little room to splurge, reach for Peter Thomas Roth Max 50 UV Milk Ultra-Lite Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ ($42), which is infused with vitamins A, C, and E to protect your skin from free radicals.
Hot sun and salty or chlorinated water is a combination that can take a serious toll on your strands. Protect your hair with an SPF that blocks UV rays to keep dryness and damage at bay; it’s also great for those with dyed hair since it prevents color from fading too quickly. One of our go-tos is Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil ($28), a lightweight spray that gives 16-hour protection and is made with organic ingredients. Another fave is Sachajuan Hair in the Sun ($32), a serum that protects hair even after a dip in the water and only washes off with shampoo.
Packing light for spring break is key. No one wants to bring along a big makeup bag that takes up valuable space in their suitcase. Pack an extra bathing suit (or two) and even throw in some more shoes by bringing along a multipurpose makeup palette that takes up little room. Pür Cosmetics Love Your Selfie ($39) is the perfect all-in-one palette. It comes with eight eye shadows, lip gloss, mascara, blush, bronzer, and a highlighter. Not only can endless looks be created, but you also won’t have to worry about leaving anything behind. This palette will take you from day to night in a breeze. (You can watch our editor swatch some of the eye shadows right here.)
Spring break practically begs for glowing, model-worthy skin. Enter: Prtty Peaushun Skin Tight Body Lotion ($29), a body lotion that firms and lifts your skin while also promising to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and veins. It comes in five different shades, including clear, that give a subtle glow to the skin. It’s also free from any parabens, fragrance, and gluten, and can even be used on your face and hair. The best part—yes, there’s more—is that it can also heal sunburns, repel insects, and diminish the appearance of bruises. Talk about a magic potion.
No trip can be complete without a standout mani. Take a break from neutral nail polish and pick a bright, chip-resistant formula that will last all of spring break. One of our current favorites is Formula X #ColorCurators: Cupcakes and Cashmere ($13) in Hot Sauce, a vibrant red-orange that’s the perfect can’t-wait-for-summer shade. If you’re more into gel polishes (for longevity and all), try Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in Let’s Get Digital ($10), an iridescent blue with a slight pink shimmer that just screams spring.
Washing and drying your hair might fall low on your list of priorities during spring break, which is why it’s essential that you pack an oil-absorbing, fresh-smelling dry shampoo. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo ($22) is perfect for all hair types, and it leaves virtually no visible white residue.
