Reviewed: Smith & Cult Nail Polish in Dark Like Me

As beauty editors, we get bombarded with a ton of new products every day (we know—tough life). “Reviewed” is a new series where we report on some of the best products we’ve tried. Whether it’s a drugstore lipstick that lasted all day or a hand cream that saved us this winter, you’ll find all of our favorites in this column. Enjoy!

Burgundy, oxblood, and wine—these aren't the traditional shades of spring. But a nail polish in the color family (called, Dark Like Me$18) is just what I'm crushing on these days, and that's thanks to two things: Smith & Cult's insanely luxe lacquer, and Joan Smalls epic refusal to play by seasonal rules. A beauty icon in her own right (and certainly one of my top beauty icons), Smalls completely upended my approach to spring beauty when she stepped out on the eve of the first day of spring in a wine-colored lip for the ages. Here was a day when everyone else was celebrating the "official" onset of sheer formulas, light washes of color, pastels, pretty pinks, flushed rose, and floral-inspired palettes—and Joan (we're going with first-name basis for this one), Joan goes and steps out in a show-stopping, sultry matte lip of the wine variety. Because who says burgundy hues have to be relegated to fall?

Inspired by Joan Smalls' trend-breaking, trend-setting indivuality, I have been sporting Smith & Cult's moody merlot shade. Created by the same founder of '90s nail polish brand Hard Candy (which was my jam back in the day), Smith & Cult nail polishes are the chicest bottles on the block. They're sleek, heavy, and utterly sexy, with their metallic faceted cap and crisp cursive branding on the front. They're the kind of nail polish bottles you proudly display on your vanity. The formula is just like the bottles: smooth and rich (looking), and it's strongly-pigmented, so just one coat delivers perfect opaque color. It spreads evenly, and stays fresh-looking for days—even without a top coat (which I'm mostly too lazy to ever apply). So while the rest of the world embraces lighter versions of everything this spring, I'll be over here repping Dark Like Me—the spring motto (and nail polish) I'm standing by.
