Shay Mitchell's simple but sultry beauty look was one of our top picks from last night's People's Choice Awards—saying a lot, since many of the celebs to grace the red carpet were clearly determined to start award season off with a bang. But as stylist Chris Appleton reminds us, restraint often has an even higher impact than going all out. "Sometimes less is more," he says. "It was important to keep the whole look simple yet powerful. I wanted to create a sleek look that showed off Shay's beauty." Mission accomplished, no?

When opting for a look that's so clean and simple, Appleton advises to focus on making hair look healthy and hydrated. He began with Matrix's Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for Medium Hair ($22) before applying the brand's Style Link Heat Buffer Thermal Styling Spray ($18) on damp hair for heat protection (a non-negotiable).

After blow-drying, Appleton used a quarter-size amount of Matrix's Style Link Smooth Setter Smoothing Cream ($18) to tame any frizz. Next, he straightened Mitchell's strands in small sections to ensure the sleekest look possible, before creating a sharp center part with a tail comb.

To finish, Appleton amped up the wattage with Matrix's Style Link Gloss Booster ($20) and a few spritzes of the brand's Style Link StyleFixer Finishing Hairspray ($18) for hold.
