Shay Mitchell on Balancing Motherhood, Self-Care, and Accepting Help

She likes a challenge.

I can't tell you how I got into Pretty Little Liars, but I was borderline more of a fanatic than I would like to admit. If you've followed the juicy coming-of-age mystery, you've probably felt like you've grown up with (or alongside) the cast. I can say this for Shay Mitchell

It may be challenging for some stars to establish personal identities outside their on-screen personas publicly, but Mitchell has been successful. Aside from acting, Mitchell has a lot going on. She plays her most important role as mom to baby Atlas daily and most recently, she's added executive producer to her resume. Mitchell is also the creator of buzzy travel accessories brand Béis, a celebrity-backed line luggage line that is actually functional, and Onda, one of the latest trendy spiked-seltzer brands on the market. Somehow between all that—Mitchell still finds time to entertain her 6.6 million TikTok followers and secure major brand deals—including her latest partnership with TRESemmé.

Ahead, we caught up with the actress about her latest projects, current beauty routine, and how she prioritizes herself with a busy schedule.

Talk to us about your beauty routine. Any treatments/products you’ve been loving?

My beauty routine depends on how much time I have as a mom. When I am solo with baby, my beauty routine entails brushing my teeth and slapping on some moisturizer. When I have more time to practice self-care, I really indulge—face masks, oils, serums, lotions, and potions—the whole nine. Self-care also includes paying extra attention to my hair, especially during dry, cold months. I like to use TRESemme Keratin Repair products because the formulas help keep my hair's shine and integrity intact. I use the Keratin Repair shampoo and conditioner, and then the Heat Protect Spray; even if I'm air drying my hair, I love this spray to give my hair some added moisture and protect it from environmental elements.

How has motherhood changed your approach to beauty? Has it evolved as your daughter has gotten older?

Motherhood has definitely changed my approach to beauty. I have far less time than I used to, so using products that offer multiple benefits is critical for me. I always try to do the basics, but I look forward to the days when I have a little more time to do my entire routine.

After such a tough few years, how are you showing up for yourself? Any mantras, practices, or rituals that help your mental health?

I am a firm believer that everyone needs to try and take at least ten minutes for themselves daily to do something that makes you feel whole. I always try to organize my day so I have time to do something personal, be it spending time with family or friends, taking Atlas somewhere, or working out, which has become my personal version of therapy. I have also learned the value of saying no to things when I need to disconnect.

You mentioned working out as your personal form of therapy. What is your current routine like?

I work out to keep my mind focused and to build strength. I like to do a mix of different workouts from walking, running, and swimming. When I’m crunched for time, I love the 4 Weeks of Focus workout on OpenFit, which is 30 minutes a day for five days a week for four weeks.

You juggle so much between your career and personal life. What are some of the challenges and rewards?

Challenges are a part of everyday life, and I view them as opportunities for growth. I've realized in general, but especially since becoming a mom and running two businesses that it is important to surround yourself with incredible people. I can't be in five places simultaneously, but I can trust five people to share the same vision and work ethic to step in and help when needed.

You can only pack a few products in your Béis travel kit—what are you taking?

You can pack so much in the BÉIS travel kit, and they’re like Mary Poppins bags—deceptively large. I always pack sunscreen first and foremost. Whether you’re going to the mountains or the beach, the sun exists, and we have to protect ourselves. Hand sanitizer is mandatory—especially during these times. TRESemme Keratin Smooth Shine Serum is also a must-have for me, and I use it on my hair when it’s damp or dry since it’s non-greasy and gives my hair natural movement. Finally, moisturizing sheet masks because planes are so dry, and I always feel like I need to rehydrate.

What are you most looking forward to in the new year? Any new projects, goals, things your fans can expect from you?

I’m looking forward to accomplishing even more in the new year. I am prioritizing focusing on things that fulfill me and moving away from the things that don’t. And being busy—I love to keep myself busy.
