Two hours?! This was, without fail, the most popular response I fielded after informing people that I planned on locking myself in a pitch-black tank filled with salt water for 120 minutes. But why? To relax—or so I assumed. That's the general point of float therapy, anyway, among an array of other purported benefits. Designed to leave you completely alone with your thoughts without the distraction of sight, sound, or gravity, float tanks are filled with about a foot of heavily saturated salt water, which keeps the body completely buoyant without any physical effort. (Kind of like a very dark, super-isolated snippet of the Dead Sea). And last weekend, I tried it. To gain some pro intel on the benefits of isolation tanks, we consulted with licensed psychologist Brad Brenner.

What is a Sensory Deprivation Tank?
Also known as an isolation tank, a sensory deprivation tank is a form of therapy that involves a light-proof, sound-proof, pitch-black tank that contains roughly a foot of salt water to encourage flotation. The main purpose is to quite literally provide a distraction-free zone. Brennan notes that "Modern versions of sensory deprivation have been around since the 1970s. Prior versions were used mostly in research settings, including NASA astronauts training for moon missions. So, they’ve been around a long time, and their safety for the vast majority of people is well-documented." Depending on the location you go to, a one-hour session can range anywhere from $50 to $100.
Benefits of Sensory Deprivation Tanks
In addition to providing a ready-made environment for meditation and stress-relief, floating hosts an array of other benefits:

- Increases sense of well-being
- Relieves aches and pain in pregnant women
- Mitigates chronic pain
Brennan explains that isolation tanks help relieve stress and tension at both a psychological and physical level. "Research in the 1980s and 1990s found that people who used sensory deprivation tanks reported a significant reduction in stress and physical tension," he notes. "The studies also found that blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormone levels decreased."
According to Sanam Hafeez, an NYC-based neuropsychologist and faculty member at Columbia University, clinical research investigating Floatation-REST, although limited, has reported largely beneficial effects across a range of different stress-related conditions including: hypertension, chronic tension headaches, chronic muscle tension pain in the back and neck, and stress-related pain with "burnout depression." The take away, she explains, is "that while shutting out sensory overload may decrease a sense of jitters, and increase calm, it is not by training your brain to shut out the noise. It offers a 'cloud-like effect.'"
It all sounds great, but leading up to my Saturday appointment at Float Lab, a popular isolation tank destination in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, I'd be lying if I said I didn't share some of the misgivings of my incredulous friends. For one thing, I have claustrophobia that likes to rear its ugly head on rare occasions; I couldn't help but imagine that this environment would be a little too ideal for its emergence. (The fact that I was envisioning that the float tank resembles a cross between a tanning bed and coffin didn't help).
But really, it was the two-hour time slot that made me most unsure. It seemed like an awfully long time to sit still, especially at 11 o'clock in the morning. Usually, by the end of a 60-minute acupuncture session, I'm feeling rather squirmy; the same goes for meditation. I wasn't exactly confident the novelty factor would stick with me for twice that long.
"No, you'll see," assured a co-worker, the only person I spoke to who had actually tried it before. "It's like time ceases to exist in there." It sounded a little fantastical—even absurd—but I would find out that she was exactly right.
How to Prepare for a Sensory Deprivation Tank
At my Saturday appointment, I was greeted by a Float Lab tech named Cody, who gave me a speedy rundown of what to expect. I learned that there would be about 1000 pounds of dissolved Epsom salt in my float bath, and that yes, I could safely fall asleep if I wanted. I'd also need to shower before and after my float—though I couldn't use conditioner beforehand; the cosmetic residue isn't good for the tank. (Was I prepping for sensory deprivation or deep-sea diving?).
Cody handed me some earplugs and told me he would holler when my time was up, and then it was officially go-time. I showered, took out my contact lenses, sized up the tank—which did not resemble a tanning bed or coffin, but a submarine with a latch door—and stepped inside.
What to Expect During a Sensory Deprivation Tank
Brennan notes that the calming effects of an isolation tank appear to be greater for those with higher levels of anxiety. Immediately, I remembered why I had signed up for this. It was a sensation, unlike anything I've ever experienced before, to be completely suspended above water without any effort whatsoever. If I sat still enough, it really felt like I was floating in a vacuum. The water is tempered to 95 degrees exactly for that reason, so that it feels indiscernible from your normal body temperature. But for roughly the first 10 minutes, I squirmed and marveled at how weird every movement felt. (For what it's worth, I also noticed after a short while that my chronic shoulder and neck pain had completely disappeared).
It was a sensation, unlike anything I've ever experienced before, to be completely suspended above water without any effort whatsoever. If I sat still enough, it really felt like I was floating in a vacuum.
For the rest of my session, I resolved to be still and try to meditate, focusing on my passing thoughts and breathing. Every now and then, one of my limbs would graze the side of the tank or I'd grow conscious of the water beneath me—gentle reminders of reality. But considering the noise and distractions of my daily life in a bustling city—not to mention countless virtual distractions—it turned out that this was still the departure I desperately needed. And it was too short.
I was lying there, pondering how much time had passed, guessing that I was somewhere around the one-hour mark when I heard a muffled shout. I was so convinced that there was no way 120 minutes had gone by that I almost ignored it, thinking that maybe someone was just being very noisy in the building upstairs. But after peering out of the tank door at the clock for good measure, sure enough, it was 20 minutes past one. My co-worker was right—when you have nothing else to steal your focus away from relaxing and reflecting—even sight and sound—your perception of time completely warps.
There are no real side effects to a sensory deprivation tank, and that blissed-out feeling didn't last. After walking out of Float Lab's front doors and back into the crowded chaos of a Saturday afternoon on Abbot Kinney, I decided to play hooky from the half-dozen errands I had planned for the rest of the day and just wander around the neighborhood. Probably more notably, I turned off my phone as I explored—something I haven't done voluntarily in years. (And in doing so, I realized just how innate the urge to take a photo of ev-er-y-thing has become).
The Final Takeaway
There are people who float regularly, and I can absolutely see the appeal—I can only assume that like meditation, that tuned-in feeling I experienced afterward only feels more permanent with consistent practice. But I'm thinking it's worth a shot. Just like I occasionally need to wean myself from five cups of coffee a day back down to two, my technology habits are in need of a serious overhaul. I may have signed up for sensory deprivation for the experience, but I think I just walked away with my prescription.
