When Alicia Keys went makeup-free at the 2016 VMAs, she sparked a debate. This debate wasn't about whether or not she looked beautiful (of course she did), it was about whether or not a makeup-free face was appropriate for the red carpet. After all, it's no secret that society holds a rigid set of expectations when it comes to women and makeup.
Some women are derided for wearing too much while others are derided for not wearing enough, and it's quite frankly kind of exhausting. We applaud anyone who stands by their personal decisions in spite of criticism (especially when it comes to something like clothes or makeup since both are just tools for self-expression, that's all!).
The newest celeb to join the conversation, whether inadvertently or not, is Selena Gomez. She goes completely without makeup on her newest magazine cover. Keep scrolling to see the image!
Gomez appears on the fifth annual Business of Fashion print issue, called "Generation Next," which also features celebs like Adwoa Aboah and Lily-Rose Depp. The official Business of Fashion Instagram posted this photo of her cover, captioning it, "Each of our cover stars has that special something that makes them irresistible to Generation Next. And each has built long-term partnerships with major global fashion brands aiming to connect with the enormous communities of young people these influencers have attracted on social media platforms."
We love the low-key look and Gomez's grown-out lob. We also love how the no-makeup look is becoming more accepted—even for international magazine covers.
