Dull Skin? You Might Want to Try This Winter Foundation Hack

A few weeks back, we checked in with Sara Donaldson of Harper and Harley (influencer, co-owner of The Undone, and INF / Network member), for the intel on how she had prepped her skin to survive fashion week. Her advice was wise and practical, and translated beyond fashion's busiest week of the year. Anyone with a hectic daily schedule would benefit from revisiting her skincare tips—they're particularly helpful in preventing blemishes and irritation as we head into winter.

Beauty sage that she is, we couldn't resist tapping Donaldson for yet another round of tried and true tricks. Ahead, you'll find a deep dive into the influencer's skincare routine, both morning and evening, plus a makeup taster on how she creates a five-minute face. Also included: More stellar product recommendations (including the sheer lip tint every cool girl is wearing right now), and an easy foundation hack for fixing dull winter skin.

Byrdie: How would you describe your personal approach to beauty?

Sara Donaldson: Skin health is my number one priority. Then fresh, healthy, and natural-looking makeup. When your skin is good your makeup looks better, so it's a no-brainer to concentrate on that first and foremost.

B: How has your approach evolved over time?

SD: I had my fair share of turbulent skin moments through my late teens and twenties, which taught me to respect my skin and treat it well. (Even when it's going through a stage.) My go-to makeup look has evolved by trying things out. I stick with what makes me feel good, is time-efficient, and practical.

B: Describe your morning beauty routine.

SD: I use most of my serious skincare in the evenings, so in the morning I focus on toning and hydration. I wipe my face with SK-II's Facial Treatment Clear Lotion ($76), then apply rosehip oil in place of moisturizer. (My skin can get quite dry and dull this time of year, so I also add oil to my foundation for an extra boost.) I then go over my brows with Glossier’s Boy Brow ($16), apply mascara (currently a Giorgio Armani one), dab on BareMinerals' BareSkin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer ($22), and highlight with RMS’ Magic Luminizer ($38). To finish, it's Dior's Addict Lip Glow ($34) on lips.

B: Walk us through your evening beauty routine.

First I wash off my makeup with Algenist’s Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Melting Cleanser ($38), which I really like. It completely removes everything and is also quite oily, which makes my skin feel hydrated afterwards. I then use SkinMedica’s Lytera Skin Brightening Complex ($220) to work on pigmentation, and once or twice a week I'll use either Alpha-H's Liquid Gold ($60) to brighten and exfoliate. I also pop on an eye cream.
