We're Calling It: Rust Is the Color of the Season

Updated 09/23/16

Here’s a sentence you might not hear too often: We love rust. Sure, that telltale red-brown color isn’t quite so welcome when it appears on your weather-beaten bicycle, but on the catwalk? On the red carpet? YES.

From hair (hello, Rihanna!) to eye shadow (hello, Tom Ford F/W 16!), we’re just going to go ahead and declare rust the It hue of the season. (And it’s coincidentally an iteration of Pantone’s official color of the year, Marsala.) It offers all the richness we love for autumn, not to mention major versatility: Smear it on your lids to get fall’s extremely sultry take on the smoky eye, or your lips for a little bit of ’90s redux. And your hair? Choose any shade on the spectrum, from Jessica Chastain to RiRi, and you’re a bona fide siren.

It’s hard to use our words here, because we hardly need to justify Rihanna’s rusty curls—and whether you’re edgy like RiRi or lean toward an aesthetic that’s a tad more classic, this hue just works. Ask your stylist for an auburn color with a little extra copper in it, and keep it looking luminous with Rita Hazan’s Ultimate Shine Gloss ($26).

Eyeliner is a great way to subtly test out a color you’re feeling iffy about. But we have a feeling that once you see the appeal of a rust-lined eye, you’ll be ready to take it to the next level.

This ultra-saturated heavy-metal color is almost too good—just one swipe is enough to earn you some mega compliments for the day. (Our tip: It makes such an impact on its own, so skip the eyeliner and just stick with mascara—or nothing else at all!)

This fall’s answer to the smoky eye is the hazy eye, which calls for lighter shades of gray and brown. Rust totally falls under this color school—and there’s no easier way to get the look in all its undone, sexy glory than with a cream shadow.

Again, the beauty of this hue is in its versatility: Since it’s a marriage of brown and red tones, rust also offers a perfect flush of color for the rest of the face.

Need some ’90s vibes in your life? (Don’t we always?) A brown-tinged berry lip will take you there. Choose a shimmery shade if you’re feeling extra nostalgic.
