Cardio-phobes, do a happy dance: It turns out you don't need to be logging crazy mileage in order to boost your health from running. According to a wonderful new study, a 10-minute jog five days a week is all it takes to seriously cut your risk for all kinds of issues—cardiac problems, arthritis, and even cancer, to name a few—down the line… 10 minutes! That's like three Beyoncé songs.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic came to this recommendation after considering and connecting several studies from the past 15 years, including follow-ups, and looking specifically at the ways in which running impacts cardiovascular health and mortality.
Of course, there are all kinds of other benefits that go along with a more extensive cardio regimen, but the bare minimum isn't looking too shabby. And if 10 minutes of running daily is still 10 minutes too many, you'll be psyched to know that walking works too—just maybe tack on a few extra minutes for good measure. (Definitely something to keep in mind if you're injured, too.)
But who knows? Maybe with an encouraging start of 10 minutes a day, you'll find yourself pounding the pavement for just a little bit longer with time—and enjoying it. FWIW, we've found the C25K app (free) immensely helpful in keeping us motivated.
