If you're a self-tan user, then you'll know the struggles it presents. First, the application itself can be tricky (you'll need something to help reach that awkward triangle in the middle of your back, FYI). But you've also got the added issue of making it look as authentic as possible. Yes, you want to look more bronzed than your natural skin tone, but you don't want it to look so blindingly obvious that it came from the bottle.
This is exactly where the professionals come in. No, not all of us are as lucky as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to have James Read on hand whenever we have a big event coming up, but what we can do is heed his advice. And he recently shared a pretty useful nugget of wisdom with E! News.
Apparently, the key to legs that look as naturally tanned as Huntington-Whiteley's is to go slow with the application. It can be all too easy to want to chuck on the entire bottle and hope for the best, but according to Read, it's all about applying the product in fine layers (three, to be precise).
The day before Huntington-Whiteley has a red carpet appearance, "I layered the tan in fine layers," he told E! News. "By the time I got to the third layer, it looked like one because I built them up. It makes the tan deep and last longer."
The trick will work with mousse formulas, but you can also try it with an easy-to-apply bronzing mist, like James Read's.
It might take you a little longer than your regular tanning session, but the results are likely to be worth it. According to Read, you should apply a fine layer, give it 10 minutes to dry off and then apply the next.
And if you want to go deeper, even after all of that? The next day, you can top it up by applying a little tanner mixed into your favourite body lotion. "The tanner in the moisturizer will lift the express tan that you have," he told E! News. "In a couple of hours, you'll get a really nice tan that will have a wet look that makes the legs reflective."
