As beauty editors, we get bombarded with a ton of new products every day. (We know—tough life.) Reviewed is a series where we report on some of the best products we’ve tried. Whether it’s a drugstore lipstick that lasted all day or a hand cream that saved us this winter, you’ll find all of our favorites in this column. Enjoy!
For as long as I can remember, congestion on my nose and chin was just a reality I had to contend with. No product—expensive or not—would clear them. Every month or so, I go in for extractions and come out with a completely clear face, nary a blackhead in sight. But, sure enough, over the span of the next few weeks, those pesky little guys pop back up in the same places they've always been. After a while, I stopped trying to fight it and just accepted that I was a girl with blackheads. (This is me trying to be skin-positive).
After a particularly exciting meeting with all-natural brand Root Science, all of that changed. They sold me on their Reborn Youth Enhancing Face Mask ($60), a product meant to even skin tone, stimulate collagen production, and restore a youthful glow to your skin. Turmeric is freshly ground for each micro-batch and mixed with unrefined, sun-dried Moroccan clay, as well as therapeutic-grade essential oils and coconut charcoal.
I hurried home that night and enthusiastically applied the concoction to my face. When mixed with water, the gray powder transforms into rich, velvet mud (the process is so satisfying) and dries into a paste that you can feel pulsing as the minutes roll by. I left it on for the recommended 10 minutes and began to wash it off at my skin—expecting my skin to glow but my blackheads to stay in place.
Boy, was I wrong. I finished drying my face with a towel and practically yelped with joy when I inspected my face afterward. Yes, it was glowing. Yes, it looked fresh and youthful. But, in place of my dark, speckle-y blackheads was clean, clear skin. I could not believe it.
Turns out, the clay is meant to stimulate youthful blood flow and promote skin repair—but together with silica and magnesium, it actively clears your pores of buildup as well. What's more, together with coconut charcoal and turmeric root (a naturally occurring salicylic acid), the clay detoxifies, binds to toxins, and pulls dirt and oil from your problem areas. For me, those problem areas reside around my nose and chin. So on days when I need a quick pick-me-up, I can spot treat and remove blackheads without doing a full mask. I know I'm on the verge of gushing, but hereby grant this mask life-changing status.
