It's official: 18 years post–Legally Blonde, it's been reported that MGM and Reese Witherspoon have finally closed a deal securing the third installment of perhaps one of the most iconic movies in history (at least by our standards). A third Legally Blonde movie is officially happening, and Witherspoon will finally reprise her role as the beloved Elle Woods 15 years after the last time we saw her circa the film's sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. And though the latter admittedly fell victim to less-than-enthused viewers and critics, we're hoping the upcoming addition has better luck.
(And if the already-scintillating buzz is any indication, we have a hunch it will.)
We're still waiting to glean the majority of details about the new film, but yesterday via Instagram, Witherspoon—in true Elle Woods fashion—confirmed her role, captioning her epic post, "It's true...#LegallyBlonde3."
As of yet, no other cast members have been publicly confirmed, but Cosmopolitan reports that writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah will be back, in addition to original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. (Witherspoon is also reportedly set to join.)
So as we wait for the official release date and additional casting news to trickle in, we quenched our thirst for Legally Blonde nostalgia by searching the web for Witherspoon's most important beauty looks pre-2001, when the first film premiered. Keep scrolling for 10 of her must-see moments.
Here, a baby-faced Witherspoon is photographed circa 1991 during the Deauville Film Festival in France (10 years before Legally Blonde).
1993: Witherspoon is photographed on the red carpet fresh-faced with a natural pop of color on her lips and her strands pulled back into a tight ponytail (so '90s, no?).
In 1996, Witherspoon debuted a comparatively angsty look at Bowery Bar in New York City. Vampy dark lips, an ultra-powdered face, and a clipped, spiky updo make the look.
The next year, Witherspoon kept the bold lip trend going strong (a striking shade of brick red seems to be her signature) but added some polish with her crisp, chin-length bob.
Is it just us or did model Jasmine Sanders just wear a similar look for the CFDA fashion awards? Regardless, the actress made blue eye shadow cool during a premiere in 1998.
For the 1999 Cruel Intentions premiere (which we now want to rewatch immediately), Witherspoon resorted to her previous fresh-faced aesthetic which was anchored by romantic, flowing curls.
Perhaps foreshadowing her upcoming roll in Legally Blonde, the actress debuted Elle Woods's signature haircut one year prior to the film's premiere.
During the 2001 Golden Globe Awards, Witherspoon walked the red carpet with Marilyn Monroe–esque curls and an ode to Old Hollywood Glamour.
Ah, the moment we've been waiting for! During the Los Angeles premiere of Legally Blonde, Witherspoon couldn't look more quintessentially Elle with her pink dress, updo, and rosy-toned makeup.
In August 2001 for the Teen Choice Awards, Witherspoon complemented a piece-y new haircut with shimmery copper eyelids and bright pink lips and cheeks.
