We constantly ask makeup artists which products we should use to make our overall look more flawless or which methods we should definitely, absolutely quit doing, but there's uncharted territory we don't cross into often enough: the makeup products they use on themselves.
Celebrity makeup artists are always teaming up with different brands and using their products for fashion shows and red carpet looks or sifting through a suitcase full of products to try on clients. While these makeup artists surely have their favorites that they keep revisiting, it's the holy-grail products they personally use that get placed on a pedestal. As such, we asked some top makeup artists which products have taken up a permanent residency in their makeup bags. Keep scrolling for their top picks.
Greenberg, who boasts clients such as Kaley Cuoco and Rashida Jones, loves this highly pigmented powder palette: "The texture is great, it's inexpensive, and a wonderful selection of colors for many looks."
"It has (the) perfect coverage for me. It looks like natural skin, and I love it!"
"The formula is buildable, and the brush wraps around the lashes, giving them a full coat of inky black drama,” says Scali, whose client roster includes Anna Kendrick and Elisabeth Rohm.
Kate McKinnon's go-to makeup artist and Justin Timberlake's groomer swears by this magic serum for model-worthy skin. "I love Caudalie's Premier Cru the Elixir because it keeps my skin soft and glowing."
Monika Blunder, famed artist who creates looks for Gemma Chan and Molly Sims loves this full-coverage foundation replacement: "I use It Cosmetics CC cream in medium most days because it's super easy to apply, gives me great coverage, and it has an SPF of 50."
"I also use Benefit Roller Lash every day. This mascara is my absolute favorite because it gives me a super-nice curled lash without looking clumpy or heavy!"
Sesnek, makeup artist to stars like Lucy Hale and Hailey Bieber is as much of a concealer junkie as we are. "On days where I'm up at 3 a.m. and on a few hours of sleep, I will use this concealer in medium, just in the inner corners of the eye," he says. "Almost everyone—men included—have darkness in the inner eye area. This product is more of a salmon/beige color, so it's not going to look like you're wearing anything at all, but it does work! Start slow and build up to desired intensity, pat in with fingers and remove excess with a tissue. You will look like you had eight plus hours of sleep."
"Like most men, I tend to be more on the oily side with my skin. To still add moisture without the extra shine and oil, I love the Embryolisse Hydra-Mat Emulsion. It keeps my skin hydrated with a soft matte finish. All skin, including oil-prone, needs moisture, but this product delivers without the excess oily look."
"I love this, as it's a huge skin booster and leaves my skin moisturized and soft. I take it everywhere on my travels, as it not only nourishes the skin but heals any irritants too," explains Halperin.
"There are no words for this product except that I'm obsessed. It gives the most silky-smooth lips around," says Halperin, who works with leading actors including Brad Pitt and Paul Rudd for red carpet events.
Walsh, who is the lead makeup artist for MTV's Scream, uses Amarte on the show's cast during filming and also for her go-to everyday skincare routine: "Whether it's in the studio or on the street, Amarte is the only choice when it comes to creating perfect skin in every climate across the globe. I use the Amarte Natural Finish BB Cream every day. I also layer Amarte Aqua Lotion ($75) and Amarte Ultra Veil Sunscreen ($39) on the Scream cast to keep skin balanced and protected when filming in swampy Louisiana climates," she says.
"I use Chanel Corrector Perfection Long Lasting Concealer under my eyes. It has a natural matte finish that's undetectable even in broad daylight," says Nelson, whose clients include Ashley Graham and Nicole Richie. The bad news: this concealer is unfortunately, out of stock. The good news: there's a similar version from Chanel that offers a light to medium buildable coverage. Use the wand applicator to add a few dots under your eyes and blend using your ring finger.
"I also use the Oribe beauty oil as a moisturizer, but also, I sometimes put a few extra drops on my cheekbones to give my skin a fresh-from-the-shower glow."
McAdams, who is also Rachel McAdams's sister (and dopplegänger) loves this foundation for special occasions. "La Mer foundation is my current favorite for when I'm going out at night or for a special event. I can wear it for hours without getting cakey or oily, and the shade Linen is a perfect match for my skin."
"I love the Laura Mercier eye caviar sticks. They are really user-friendly and come in lots of great shades. You just scribble them along your lash line and blend with your finger. Once they are set, they aren't going anywhere, so they are both fast and easy," says McAdams, whose clients include Jessica Biel and Sofia Vergara.
"My new favorite product to use every day is this mascara by It Cosmetics. Every woman should own it!" says Pezzetta, who works with Nia Long and Marsai Martin.
"I love how sheer but still totally vibrant these blushes are," says Stiles, whose client roster includes Lily Collins and Gabrielle Union.
"My perfect day-to-day lip color. I'm never without it," says Stiles of Hydrashine Lip Color in Louella from her namesake cosmetics line, Fiona Stiles Beauty. While this dusty pink lipstick is no longer available you can, thankfully, find a similar shade at the drugstore. We like the balm-like feel of L'Oréal's version.
