Celebrity esthetician Renee Rouleau urges you to cleanse every night before you go to bed: "Cleansing your skin at night will lessen the amount of oil on the skin, removing acne-causing bacteria, which will result in fewer blemishes. Touching your face all day long, without intentionally doing so, makes your face one of the dirtiest parts on your body. It’s a fact that bacteria thrives in oil, so why give bacteria a chance to cause blemishes?"
Joie Torvend, an esthetician at MedSpa by CT Derm, says that her go-to line for clear skin is Epionce. She loves the Lytic Gel Cleanser, which is antimicrobial to treat the skin without stripping it down. "When the skin is healthy, then the skin tends to stay clear longer!" she says.
Aside from your typical exfoliating washes, Rouleau suggests using exfoliants like glycolic acid, AHAs and BHA, and enzymes such as pumpkin, papaya, and pineapple. "For the best results, use for three nights on and three nights off," she explains.
Sure, it's easy to just head to the gym right after work with the day's makeup still intact, but Holly Byerly, esthetician for VMV Hypoallergenics, says it pays off to wash it all off first: "Exercising while wearing makeup can worsen acne-prone adult skin. Leave the makeup off while exercising and make sure to thoroughly cleanse the skin after perspiration, to prevent sweat acne. I suggest cleansing with a gentle cleanser such as VMV Hypoallergenics Hydrabalance Cleanser before working out."
Celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas explains that the key to glowing skin is to start with your diet: "I would strongly suggest avoiding sugar, dairy, and wheat. All of those things are hard to digest and lead to breakouts, even in adult skin! On the flip side, I would recommend trying to eat veggies with every meal—they will help your digestive system and keep your skin nice and clear. If that's a tall order, then buy liquid chlorophyll from Whole Foods. It's easier to swallow and will make the skin clear and glowing!"
Vargas also suggests treating yourself to a daily green juice for a beautiful complexion: "My number one tip for glowing skin is absolutely my favorite skin fix: Drink a green juice every day. It will be a great replacement to your afternoon coffee, and it will literally transform your skin in a matter of days. It helps oxygenate the skin and stimulates lymphatic drainage, so it's depuffing, too! My skincare solution for the skin needing greens is my Daily Serum. It's a green juice for the skin!"
