If ever there were someone we’d trust to share highlighting and contouring tips, it would definitely be someone who’s worked with the Kardashian-Jenner clan. That’s why when we discovered a new tip from Kim’s makeup artist, Hrush Achemyan, in Allure, we immediately stopped what we were doing. Apparently, the trick we’ve been told all along about applying highlighter with a brush in an upward direction is false. According to Achemyan, it’s all about going with the grain: “You want to use downward strokes because you don’t want to enhance pores; you want to conceal them.” This was almost a facepalm moment for us—clearly brushing upward and against the pores would only make them stand out more—it’s a no-brainer!
Joshua Zeichner, an assistant professor in the dermatology department at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, says that you can determine the direction of your pores by looking at which way the tiny peach fuzz is growing on your face (virtually all peach fuzz grows in a downward direction). While Zeichner says that the direction in which you brush your makeup in won’t affect the health of your pores, we’re still willing to try this new technique and see if we notice any difference in our complexion.
For a Kardashian-worthy glow, we love Benefit's Watt's Up! Cream-to-Powder Highlighter ($30).
