As our world seems to grow increasingly smaller (thanks, social media!), our curiosity about the beauty habits of women across the globe only seems to grow. Take hair trends, for example. No doubt American women have been snip-happy for the past few years, but what's the most-requested haircut in Tokyo's top salons right now? Which styles dominate the Pinterest boards of beauty-savvy Aussies? What's the hairdo du jour à Paris?
We got to researching to find out—by scouring international magazines and street style snaps, perusing the Instagram feeds of influencers around the world, and reaching out to our global network of editors and industry pros. Spoiler alert (although is it really a surprise?): The lob is still a favorite in several places, in all kinds of variations. But we're also seeing some countries embrace longer locks, and effortless texture reigns across the board. Get the full breakdown below.
Dare we say the age of the blowout is coming to a close? Women are embracing their natural texture across the globe, off the runway and on—and we specifically noted a lot of free-flying curls at São Paulo's latest fashion week.
"The lob has been really been popular for a while now, but it's one of those haircuts that suits most women and is easy to style and maintain," says Amy Lawrenson, editor at Byrdie UK. "It also looks quite effortless and cool, which suits British women who, on the whole, are quite low maintenance." If you have a bob or lob already, give it some London flavor by skipping the curling iron (and even the blow-dryer) and reaching for texturizing spray instead.
No surprises here: Undone, effortlessly chic hair is basically the French girl MO. But it's particularly trendy at the moment. "At the moment, disheveled and messy look is making waves—the sort of ‘under-washed’ bed hair look," says Parisian hairstylist David Mallett, adding that this style is perfect for rehabbing strands damaged by heat-styling and product overuse. Want the full French effect? Pair your tousled waves with a tousled fringe, à la Caroline de Maigret.
Women are grabbing scissors across the globe, but India is one of the few countries where long locks still rule. Bollywood stars like Kriti Sanon, Deepika Padukone, and Katrina Kaif display their long, loose waves for Instagram and the red carpet alike.
According to Vogue Italia (with plenty of street style evidence to back it up), Italian women are ditching their perfectly undone lobs for choppier, punkier silhouettes, like the increasingly popular shag cut. Not sold on shearing your entire mane just yet? Try the look on for size with razor-cut bangs first.
We're seeing bobs and lobs of all varieties on the streets of Tokyo, but none so much as this artsy version. And the nuances don't stop there: The blunt fringes range in length from eyelash-grazing to an inch above the brow.
Hairstylist extraordinaire Harry Josh predicted it back in January: As the era of the lob cycles forward, American women are starting to grow out their locks again. But the same styling—blunt ends and tousled waves—makes for an easy transition.
