It's not often we come across a product that calls for a full routine overhaul. It takes something pretty impressive to persuade me to completely reevaluate my beauty lineup, especially when it comes to something as fundamental as an everyday moisturizer. For the last two months (though I was convinced after approximately two days), I've given my daily moisturizing cream an indefinite break and have adopted an oil—yes, an oil—to tackle my 24-hour moisturizing needs.
I began using One Love Organics Botanical E Youth Preservation Serum ($75) while on a long weekend trip in July. I had initially planned on using it only at night, to lock in moisture and rejuvenate skin for the following morning, but my face felt so good and refreshed the next day that I decided to apply it under my sunscreen for daytime. When I use the serum in the morning, by the late afternoon my skin is still soft and supple to the touch—feeling as if I've just applied a moisturizing cream.
After that weekend, I was hooked and made it a permanent fixture in my travel beauty bag (loving that it's designed for use both day and night) and also turning to it most days, eventually using it to replace my daily moisturizer entirely.
The plant-based formula works beautifully on combination skin. It ameliorates both dryness and oiliness (I typically get dry around my nose and mouth and oily on my forehead) and leaves a balanced, lightweight finish that's anything but greasy.
Some oil serums—while I love what they do for my skin—simply smell too funky to wear out during the day, but that's not the case with this product (the scent is understated and agreeable). Oftentimes oils aren't the right texture to allow for makeup application on top, but this one actually multitasks as an effective primer. Even though it's an oil, the Botanical E Youth Preservation Serum doesn't disturb makeup but instead helps to impart a dewy finish.
On no-makeup days, I top it off with Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 PA+++ ($65) after letting the serum sink into the skin for at least 10 minutes during my morning routine. When I wear makeup, I simply dot Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick ($46) along my t-zone and any problem areas, then gently blend with a Beautyblender ($20). For more coverage, I apply a small amount of Givenchy Teint Couture Everwear Foundation ($52) directly onto the Beautyblender, then gently dab all over and blend for a subtle, natural-looking finish. I've gotten really into using RMS Beauty Living Luminizer ($38) as a highlighter along the top of my cheeks and brow bones, and the moisturized base of the serum-as-primer complements the sheer shimmer, synergizing for a glow-from-within look. But most importantly, there's no need to continually reapply moisturizer throughout the day—skin is good to go, moisturized and dewy, from dawn to dusk.
