What It's Really Like to Get Ready for the Oscars With Olivia Culpo

Updated 02/27/17

While it might seem like Olivia Culpo wakes up looking red carpet ready, there is in fact a beauty squad responsible for her 2017 Oscars red carpet look. And, fortunately for us, the woman behind Culpo's sleek pony and slicked side bangs, hairstylist Justine Marjan, gave us an exclusive behind-the-scenes breakdown of Culpo's Academy Awards beauty look.

While we love gawking at celebrities' finished looks on the Oscars red carpet, we are even more intrigued by the behind-the-scenes images—we want to learn how to create the red carpet looks, not just stare at them. To show us how to get Culpo's extra-long wrapped pony, Marjan shared all the products and tips necessary to re-create the look at home. For Marjan's step-by-step instructions on how to get Culpo's red carpet–worthy hairstyle, keep on reading.

Marjan began, "Happy Oscars Sunday! I have a super-early start this morning, so I'm starting with two things that give me energy on the go: Olly Women's Multi Gummy Vitamins ($14) and French press coffee with almond milk."

The stylist snapped a picture of her red carpet hair kit, saying, "My kit is ready to go! I'm literally prepared for everything."

Marjan headed to The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel to prep Culpo for the Oscars, and said, "Made it to The Roosevelt! Olivia and I are discussing inspo for the hair. The dress is almost 1920s inspired—very intricate and feminine, so we didn't want to do anything with the hair that would overpower it. We ended up going with a sleek side part inspired by the Marchesa runway, so I'm going to prep her hair with Tresemmé Extra Hold Gel ($4) before blow-drying her hair with my Ghd Air Hairdryer ($199) to really set the side parting."

"I always come prepared with TONS of Rapunzel of Sweden hair extensions. They usually last me a long time because I only heat-style them with Ghd tools, which maintain a heat setting of 365°F so the tools never get too hot to damage the hair. After I use them, I like to condition them with the Tresemmé Repair and Protect Conditioner ($5) overnight," explained Marjan.

Marjan continued, "I love working with Sir John on makeup. He is so creative and always pushes Olivia to do something bold and unique. I'm smoothing Olivia's pony with Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Serum ($6) and my Ghd Platinum Styler ($249)! The Ghd tri-zone technology keeps the hair smooth and shiny with long-lasting results."

"We had a tiny break in the day, so Olivia and I snuck outside and had our own mini photo shoot!" Marjan said of this behind-the-scenes shot. "If I weren't a hairstylist, I would definitely be a photographer!"

In this photo, Marjan noted that she was "trimming the pony so it's super slick and blunt at the bottom for a dramatic finish."

"She's dressed and ready to go! Sneaking a few extra photos before she runs out the door," said Marjan.

"I had one more client after Olivia, and now I'm finally home and watching the Oscars. So tired and I have a 3 a.m. call time tomorrow, so it's early to bed with my Olly Restful Sleep Vitamin Gummies ($14)," Marjan concluded.
