Getting ready for bed can be a meditative experience—as long as you have the right products. That time spent alone in the bathroom is some of the only 100% you time that may exist in a day. Between your job, responsibilities, and social life, you need that time to decompress (and to get a good, restorative night's sleep).
After years of research, I've honed in on my perfect routine. It keeps my skin glowing, hair on point, and soul nourished just in time to lay my head on my Slip Silk Pillowcase ($80). Below, I've detailed every last habit and product I use to get the best possible beauty sleep.
I start with a cleanser and a hair mask. Right now, I'm partial to the Leonor Greyl Paris Before Shampoo Treatment ($59) because it's really great for summer. The blend of natural oils is the perfect pre-shampoo treatment to nourish dry, over-processed hair or help protect from sun, saltwater, and chlorine. I massage it into my strands and ends, and I move on to my face. I have a few different options in rotation, but I love Glossier's Milky Jelly Cleanser ($18) because it removes all my makeup and feels really moisturizing at the same time. If I need a bit of a deeper cleanse, I'll go with 20 minutes in Root Science's Reborn Mask ($60). The formula evens skin tone, stimulates collagen production, and restores a nice flushed glow to the skin.
Now on to moisture. Again, I use a few different options throughout the week. I love Amanda Lacey's Oils of Provence ($160) when I'm feeling extra dry and stressed out. It's a soothing blend of eucalyptus, bois de rose, and sage that will send you right to sleep—and help you wake up with really good skin.
Another amazing option (often I'll layer two on top of each other) is Elemis's Cellular Recovery Skin Bliss Capsules ($110). Made to counteract everyday forms of pollution, these tiny color-coded capsules contain rose, lavender, and moringa oleifera—an oil that helps break down toxins and improve visible signs of aging.
After a tip from Byrdie editorial director Faith, I have been obsessed with this thick, creamy eye mask. Sisley’s Eye Contour Mask ($145) is a dream come true as it uses plant-based ingredients and tons of vitamins to smooth puffiness and reduce dark circles while you sleep. I apply a healthy amount and leave it on while I do the rest of my routine.
La Prairie Anti-Aging Eye and Lip Perfection à Porter ($160) is so handy—it has both a super-luxe eye cream and a lip balm. I use the lip balm about a hundred times a day, but especially before bed. That way, I wake up with supple, plump, hydrated lips. La Prairie’s signature cellular complex allows the formula to swell with water in the skin to fill wrinkles and plump lips. Yes please.
I move on from my face to douse my body in Nucifera's Balm ($37). Byrdie associate editor Victoria turned me on to this one. First of all, it does basically everything you've ever wanted out of a moisturizer: evens and illuminates skin tone, reduces inflammation, boosts collagen, increases skin elasticity, reduces wrinkles, improves dry skin problems, and it has natural anti-bacterial and SPF properties. So there you have it. I slather the balmy, creamy formula made of coconut and avocado oil, mango butter, and a blend of lavender, peppermint, and palo santo on my arms, legs, chest, and stomach. And yes, it smells as good as it sounds.
If I skipped the hair mask (I only do it once a week), I'll usually throw some dry shampoo in the mix. My hairstylist mentioned it's a good idea to apply before bed rather than in the morning. That way, your grease and oil are gone but you don't deal with any chalky residue. I just starting using Ouai's Dry Shampoo ($24) and I'm already hooked. Just a few sprays and a hair flip and you're good to go.
The last stop in my routine is Nicole Granato's Nourish Capsules ($42). Formulated to “assist your body and mind through daily stressors,” this powerful blend of superfoods promotes beauty from the inside out. So I take them before bed for a boost while I sleep.
