We've all made our fair share of New Year's resolutions in the past. These well-intentioned promises to our future selves often start off well but tend to peter out come mid-February (when we realise can't commit to being a vegan, yoga-addict that runs five miles a day).
But we still really like the idea of setting our intentions for the New Year and urging our brains into a new mindset that will see us through 2020 feeling a little more balanced. Journaling would be good for that, but we've also been toying with the idea of a New Year's resolution spell. And before you roll your eyes, hear us out.
Okay, we know it all sounds a little strange, but if 2019 was the year that the mainstream really embraced the healing power of crystals, then we're sure as hell ready to upgrade to the next step of our spiritual journey. And word on the street is that come 2020, we're all going to be casting spells left, right and centre.
I mean, take it from Semra, founder of Mama Moon candles and a self-confessed modern-day witch. Like many of her contemporaries, she practices all manner of spiritual rituals on her pursuit of a more balanced, healed and happy life. And according to her, partaking in a little spell—which, in reality, is little more than mixing up a few herbs while setting down your intentions, there's no cauldrons here—can really help bring in all the positivity we're hoping to receive from the universe. Think of it as a souped-up meditation session and it'll make so much more sense straight away.
Well, it's worth a shot, right? We asked Semra to share with us a ritual that we can all do from the comfort of our own homes to bring good fortune and happiness into our lives for 2018—a New Year's resolution spell if you will. Keep scrolling as she talks us through the stages of the ritual.
What You'll Need:
- A pestle and mortar
- 1/4 tea spoon of all spice (for new beginnings, cleansing the past and positive energy)
- 5 cloves (protection, inner strength, courage and visions of what is ahead)
- 1 small nutmeg (for health and good luck)
- 1/4 stick of cinnamon (for prosperity and love)
- Charcoal discs
- Fire-proof dish
- Pen and paper
"You can choose to be as woo-woo as you like when doing a mini spell like this one," she recommends. "Don’t worry too much about getting something wrong or making a mistake, the main thing is that your intentions are all good."
Plus, you can either do this spell with friends or on your own.
Clean up: "If you are doing it alone then I would say its always nice to take a bath before you start making magic. So I recommend starting with a cleansing ritual of a bath or shower, which you can make extra special by adding and crystals and salts."
Dress up: "Personally, I like to wear something nice before making a spell. I think that dressing up for a ritual helps me to focus on and respect that it’s a special occasion—I would never make a spell in my pyjamas!"
Set up: "Create a sacred space on the floor or table that is clear of clutter and electronics. Light some candles and lay out your favourite crystals. Maybe you can add some flowers, a photo of anyone special to you or of a goddess that you identify with, feathers, pebbles or any keepsakes that you have collected that feel special to you over the years."
Calm down: "Before you start, it's a good idea to be as chilled as possible so you can really be mindful and in-the-moment of what you are doing. A nice breathing technique to get you in the right headspace is to close your eyes and gently breathe five counts in through your nostrils and breath seven or eight counts out. Repeat this for a minute and you will be feeling really nice and relaxed."
"Place your ingredients into the pestle and mortar and start mixing. It's very important to make sure you are mixing in a clockwise direction (clockwise is for bringing stuff in and anti-clockwise is for taking stuff out in spells)."
"As you mix this spell, you want to be enchanting good energy into it to focus on the fact that you are breathing in love from the universe and love out to the universe. Visualise all the things that you have gratitude for big and small, congratulate your self on your achievements of the past year and visualise all the joy that you will be experiencing in 2018."
"When everything is blended to a powder and it feels right, it's time to heat up the charcoal disc. It’s a good idea to hold the disc over the flame with some tongs or a pair of scissors if you don't have any."
"When the charcoal disc starts sparking (usually after about 10 seconds) place it in the heat-proof dish. Begin to take small pinches of the spell and sprinkle it on the charcoal disc being careful to not cover the whole thing as it will put the charcoal out."
"Watch the smoke travel in the air—it's carrying your wishes and intentions out in the universe. And at this point, you can write down anything that came up for you while you were burning the spell. Sometimes unexpected visions and thoughts can come to you and it’s a good idea to record them or instead jot down your intentions for 2018."
A final word of warning: "Don't do it anywhere near a fire alarm, as a fire alarm going of mid-ritual isn’t a good thing!"
