This Is What New Year's Eve Beauty Looks Like Around the World

Updated 04/18/19

The internet helps the beauty world feel smaller, connecting beauty trends over thousands of miles. One scroll through your Instagram feed, and you can feel as though you've taken a beauty tour of the globe. But the lovely thing is that despite the small technological world we live in, cultural individuality is somehow still preserved. And celebratory beauty is one of the areas in which those fascinating differences become crystal clear.

We are transfixed by international beauty here at Byrdie. We've explored what "natural" beauty looks like in different countries; we've gone deep into the cultural backstory of Korean beauty. But one thing we've yet to dive into is how different countries do special occasion beauty.

So, we consulted some of our favorite beauty authorities from far and wide (from Vogue China to Brazilian blogger Camila Coelho) to find out how the world does New Year's Eve makeup. Want to see the looks and products that represent NYE all over the world? Just keep scrolling.

Red is a classic makeup color for Chinese New Year, as it represents luck and wealth. This look features full brows, a matte red pout, and a metallic smokey eye to bring some drama. To re-create it, try Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Dominant ($32) and Double Wear Stay-In-Place Brow Lift Duo ($27), and Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Longwear Cream Eyeshadow Stick in Graphite (27).

The typical "going-out" look in France consists of a matte red lip and a few simple swipes of mascara. The New Year's look kicks it up a notch, adding a bit of gloss to the lip and some smoky taupe eye shadow. To re-create this vintage-inspired French look on NYE, try Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick in Rouge Zinnia($35) and Sephora Collection Eye Shadow in Coffee Break ($10).

Vanity No Apologies

This refined, feminine look from beauty blogger Anshita Juneja consists of a bright lip, a soft cat eye, and some gorgeous henna designs, which are traditionally worn on special occasions. To re-create her makeup this New Year's Eve, try Lakme Absolute Lip Pout Cream in Coral Pink ($13) and L'Oréal Infallible 24Hour Intense Gel Eyeliner ($8).

That Igbo Chick

This grungy take on New Year's Eve Makeup comes from Nigerian blogger Chidimma Umeh. The metallic smoky eye and brown lip create a stunning look. Umeh executed this look with MAC Paint in Bamboom($22), Eyeshadow in Plumage ($16), and Fluidline Pencil in Black Brilliance ($17).

Michelle Dy

Beauty guru Michelle Dy represented New Year's Eve in the Philippines with this sensual burgundy look. Dy created the dramatic, monochrome effect using mostly affordable products, like Sleek i-Divine Oh So Special Palette ($13) and i-Divine Ultra Bright Palette ($15), as well as L.A. Girl Matte Lipstick in Va Voom ($12).

We American girls love our sultry smoky eyes, especially on special occasions like New Year's Eve. This simple take on the look was created by smudging L'Oréal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black ($10) on the upper and lower lids, blended with Nars Shimmer Eyeshadow in Fez ($25).

Camila Coelho

You can always count on Brazil to deliver bombshell party makeup. Glittery gold eyes, lashes for days, and a pouty pink lip are key to this New Year's Eve look from blogger Camila Coelho. She used MAC Fixed Plus Primer ($23), Gold Glitter ($22), and Lipstick in Blankety ($17) as well as Clinique High Impact Mascara ($18).
