Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating 100% Hydrogel Mask

Neutrogena / Byrdie

My dry skin is next-level. If I don't apply hydrating products throughout the day, my complexion is extra dry and tight—to the point that every movement is borderline painful. On top of that, my skin is also sensitive and acne-prone. I try not to overwhelm my skin with too many products because I will break out.

Lucky for me, many brands cater to my complexion's needs, like Neutrogena. Its face washes (which always ended up on my floor from all the splashing I did in front of my sink) and creams never failed to leave my skin feeling soft, and I've been using the brand for over a decade. I was excited to test its Hydro Boost Hydrating 100% Hydrogel Mask, not only because it's from one of my go-to brands, but because it promises to leave my skin plump with hydration. I hoped it wouldn't be as messy as my face wash.

About The Brand: Neutrogena is a dermatologist-backed brand that has a large variety of hair and skincare products. Founded in 1930 by Emanuel Stolaroff, Neutrogena eventually merged with Johnson and Johnson. Together they have provided quality skincare products with care and affordability.

About My Skin: Thirsty and sensitive

My skin has been so dry and drab lately. I've been using serums, moisturizers, to help quell its thirst and restore its natural radiance. (I even tried a little highlighter to fake a glow—and it honestly didn't work.) If my complexion were a person, some might consider her a little spoiled, but what can I say? She knows what she wants.

On top of my skin's dryness, it's highly reactive. In other words, if I overdo it with the product, I will break out.

The Feel: Slippery and cooling

I like a juicy face mask—loaded with so much serum that there's some leftover inside of the packaging for my neck. Every little bit counts, after all.

Pulling the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Mask out of its packaging was satisfying. I enjoyed gently placing the saturated mask along the contours of my face. The gel mask was cooling—even moreso because I stuck it in the fridge before applying it. As directed, I left on the product for a full 30 minutes.

Ingredients: Hydrating, as the package says

Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient that has gained popularity in recent years for its moisture-retaining ability—and it just so happens to be the key ingredient in this mask. Upon seeing that on the packaging, I got excited, because it's exactly what my skin needed. It also contains castor oil, an ingredient, which hydrates, soothes, and helps fight bacteria.

How to Apply: Fit along the contours of your face

The actual application is pretty self-explanatory, especially because there are cutouts that are clearly for your nose, eyes, lips, and mouth. For the best results, cleanse your face before laying it down on your face. Although most prefer to use a mask at night or during a self-care Sunday moment, I believe this mask is perfect at any time due to its lightweight formula.

Results: Glowing skin that is plump with moisture

I took off the sheet mask and could feel my skin got precisely what it needed. The Hydro Boost Face Mask added softness and a subtle glow. It also appeared to calm down a hormonal breakout I was fighting. There was still some residue on my neck and skin, so I gently pat it onto drier parts of my face.

Because of how dewy it left my face, I was nervous that my skin would eventually become oily throughout the day—but that ended up not being the case. My skin felt comfortable and remained feeling fresh throughout the day. I didn’t feel the need for makeup or cover up any unwanted areas. For the first time, I felt comfortable in my skin in a long time.

The Price: Affordable

I've been feeling like my skincare has been expensive. I couldn't believe how affordable this mask is. The value is on sale for $2.99 on the brand's website, but varies across retailers (capping at $6 per mask). I would advise purchasing a bundle on the site, so you always have one handy (like the one on Amazon.) It's reliable and such a great product.
