Essences are pretty popular, but it’s still easy to confuse them with face toners when you’re looking at products to build your skincare regimen. Toners are used after cleansing to help remove any makeup or residue that your facial cleanser didn’t get, while facial essences are more like serums in that they work to help nourish and add moisture to the skin.

Since I had not used any kind of facial essence before, I was excited to see what it would do for me. I tested Neogen Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Essence to see if the hype is real. Spoiler alert: I will never be caught without a facial essence again.

About My Skin: I focus on hydration, radiance, and texture

I have combination/oily/sensitive skin, and my main concerns are that I always want my skin to look hydrated, radiant, and for the texture to be even. Aging does concern me, but I focus mostly on the appearance of my actual skin and have a skincare regime that I faithfully practice morning and evening. Some skincare brands I reach for often are Skinceuticals, Biologique Recherche, and Renee Rouleau.

How to Apply: With a cotton pad or your hands

You can apply this facial essence in two ways. If you want more control over where you apply the essence, soak a cotton pad with it and apply as desired to the face and neck. If you want to use your hands to apply the essence, sprinkle some into your palms and pat it all over the skin until it’s completely absorbed. You’ll want to apply it morning and evening after cleansing.

The Results: Glowing, hydrated skin

I really enjoyed using this essence and incorporating it into my skincare routine. I noticed right away that the product doesn’t have a strong fragrance, which is a plus, and it absorbed easily into the skin with no irritation whatsoever.

After applying the essence, my skin looked nice and dewy and I felt a boost of hydration.

After applying the essence, my skin looked nice and dewy and I felt a boost of hydration. I also noticed how much better my makeup looked after using this product. And after applying at night and seeing my skin in the morning, it looked really fresh upon waking. The application process was so easy, and I did try both methods of using my hands and a cotton pad. Since I did not want to waste any product, the cotton pad application method worked better for me, but it’s entirely up to you how you want to apply it.

The Value: Well worth it

You might have slight sticker shock at the $38 price tag, but when you look at how large the bottle is (just over 5 ounces) and how little product you need to use each day, the product and the results it delivers is well worth the money, in my opinion. It also costs less than many similar products on the market.

Similar Products: You've got options

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ($99): A bestseller, this facial essence is lightweight, but the benefits are powerful. It’s a lot more expensive than Neogen’s essence, but it makes your skin feel soft and plump to the touch.

Fresh Beauty Kombucha Antioxidant Facial Treatment Essence ($74): This hydrating essence focuses on protecting skin from pollution. It costs more for a 5 oz. bottle, but also comes in a mini and value size.

Tatcha The Essence Skincare Boosting Treatment ($65): This fermented essence helps skin feel softer and look more radiant. It comes in travel and full sizes.

Final Verdict

Adding the Neogen Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Essence to your skincare routine is a good idea if you’re looking for extra hydration and want your skin to glow on a daily basis.
