We’re not shy about our love for natural skincare lines here at Byrdie HQ. Brands like Tata Harper and Drunk Elephant prove that natural doesn’t have to rule out chic or luxurious—and not surprisingly, the same goes overseas. Ahead, we’ve rounded up seven cult skincare lines from around the world that are natural, effective, and are the furthest thing from “hippy-dippy.” Keep scrolling to see them all!
The Brand: Lewin & Reilly
The Country: Australia
The Story: The husband-and-wife duo of Kim Lewin-Reilly and Andi Reilly were inspired to start the all-natural, paraben-free skincare brand during their honeymoon in the Cook Islands. The tropical location and its native plant life motivated the couple to create a line of healthy skincare products. Made in a workshop in Melbourne, every product contains a blend of wild harvested and organic natural components, including plant extracts and pure oils, like the line's hero ingredient, Kakadu Plum Oil. The potent ingredient, found in the Byrdie editor-approved Cleansing Oil ($56) and Face Tonic ($42), has the highest naturally occurring levels of Vitamin C in the world, promoting collagen production and cell turnover. The pungent scent might take some getting used to, but all the products leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized.
The Brand: Pai Skincare
The Country: United Kingdom
The Story: Sarah Brown decided to launch Pai after years of dealing with severe skin allergies. Her goal? To create a line for people with extremely sensitive and highly reactive skin like her own. The plant-based products are formulated with skin-soothing ingredients and free of chemicals, alcohol, and fragrance. We especially love the brand’s Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser ($70); the multitasking face wash comes with a muslin cloth to gently clean and exfoliate delicate skin, without dryness or irritation. It melts away dirt, makeup, and other impurities, while vitamins A, B, and E, replenish moisture for a smooth complexion.
The Brand: Absolution
The Country: France
The Story: The first thing you'll notice about cult French skincare line Aboslution is the stunning, sleek, black-and-white packaging. But, as we’ve all learned, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts—and the line doesnt disappoint in that regard, either. All of the products contain wild plants, minerals, natural vitamins, and ingredients produced by organic farming. Try the brand’s powerful anti-aging creams to regenerate and restructure. The day cream, La Crème du Jour, is formulated with aloe vera, neroli essential oil, and cucumber extract to moisturize, while the night cream, La Crème du Soir, is rich in argan oil, vitamin E, and omega 3 to prevent wrinkles and plump the skin. The Le Soin Regard eye cream is a favorite among It-girls for its ability to de-puff, reduce dark circles, and illuminate.
The Brand: Belmondo
The Country: Canada
The Story: Founded by licensed esthetician Daniela Belmondo, Belmondo is a handmade, olive oil-based skincare line with gentle, skin-loving ingredients and the cutest packaging. The products are crafted in British Columbia with signature mix of organic ingredients, like chamomile flower and rosehip. The intensely hydrating The Cloud Face Cream ($52), infused with olive oil, evening primrose oil, and calendula, nourishes and relieves dry or sensitive skin, and is especially life-saving for anyone with eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. The Rain Apple Cider Vinegar Wash ($33), made with lavender and aloe vera, is ideal for acne-prone skin; the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties work to minimize breakouts and remove dead skin.
The Brand: Whamisa
The Country: Korea
The Story: Whamisa combines organic ingredients with Korean fermentation technology to create highly concentrated products for the skin (you can read more about why we're obsessed with fermented skincare ingredients here). Our favorites from the line are the Organic Flowers & Aloe Vera Fermented Hydrogel Facial Mask ($9) and the Organic Fruits & Tomato Fermented Hydrogel Facial Mask ($9), which bring a whole new level to the sheet mask trend with their thin, hydro-gel texture that sticks to your face like a second skin. The Organic Flowers Water Cream ($35) is another editor favorite because it lightly hydrates, smells amazing, and leaves oily and dry skin soft and bright.
The Brand: Shiffa
The Country: United Arab Emirates
The Story: Dermatologist Dr. Lamees Hamdan launched Shiffa in 2004, following the success of her Pregnancy Body Oil ($81), which she developed when she was pregnant with her first child because she couldn’t find a product that was natural and effective enough. The oil contains apricot and macadamia to soften the skin, while mandarin and tangerine tone and firm. Hamdan’s entire luxurious line of skincare products promote healing of the mind and body with precious ingredients harvested from around the world (think indulgent and fragrant ingredients like African shea butter, Indian amber, and Lebanese orange blossom). Another cult favorite? The brand’s Healing Balm ($107), a do-it-all balm that repairs and soothes wherever you choose to use it; rosemary, lavender, and arnica extract work together to rejuvenate and restore your skin.
The Brand: Miöja
The Country: South Africa
The Story: Miöja skincare products are comprised of organic plant extracts and minerals from South Africa to nourish the skin and speed up the healing and regeneration processes. The brand has three ranges—Orange, Green, and Violet—that are each formulated to balance a specific energy. Try the Wild Ginger Stimulating Mask ($41) from the Orange Range to energize and stimulate dull skin, and the Palmarosa Balancing Cleanser ($38) from the Green Range to calm your oily skin and regulate sebum. The White Clay & Chamomile Skin Polish ($41) from the Violet Range exfoliates the skin with rice grains and deep cleanses with Kaolin clay for a glowing, bright complexion.
