Hasse Nielsen for Scandinavia S/S/A/W

Transitioning to a natural routine, in the beauty sense, ain't easy. From cutting out synthetic or non-organic ingredients, to deciphering the eco-friendly-ness of a product's packaging, there's a lot to think about. And that's before you even consider the phenomenon of "greenwashing". While some products are easier to replace than others, (think: body oils), there are a few that seem nigh on impossible. (Which is why this natural deodorant is such a find.) Makeup seems to fall into this category too, with amazing synthetic-free foundation and mascara formulas extra-difficult to find. To solve this problem, we reached out to organic makeup artist Cathy Tolpigin, for her expertise and advice. Her specialization in natural and cruelty-free makeup means she knows what's what when it comes to products that wear well on the skin and deliver a professional finish. Tolpigin's challenge? To find all-natural dupes for 9 cult beauty buys. To be clear, this isn't about bashing non-natural products or encouraging a culture in which brands copy best-sellers. It's about helping anyone keen to go eco to navigate the often confusing world of green makeup. (That, and offering planet-friendly alternatives to a few old favorites.)
