Coachella is kind of like Halloween or New Year's Eve. Weird comparison, I know, but bear with me. You see, each year, it comes around in April and presents us with another opportunity to broaden our makeup horizons, to play with color and texture, and most importantly, to break out of our day-to-day beauty routine. Just like the edgy characterized makeup of Halloween or the ample glitter eye shadow of New Year's Eve, it offers us a chance to do something outside of the status quo. Consequently, we don't want to squander this music festival opportunity with our everyday eye shadow palettes and nude lipsticks.
That's why we do research each year to put together a list of the best, and most inspiring, festival looks that we can re-create for ourselves. There's a look for everyone, whether you subscribe to the less-is-more approach or you prefer the brightest, most eye-catching colors and shapes. Please excuse us while we peruse these 12 looks, get our desert beauty bags together, and hit the road to Indio. From us to you, happy Coachella.
Let's start with what we think is a timeless Coachella classic as far as we're concerned: eye glitter. Instead of applying it across the lid, shake things up and use lash glue to bind it to the under eye area. (If only covering up our dark circles were this easy every day.)
If glitter isn't your thing, try a stripe of graphic eye shadow like this neon orange here. (We like Make Up For Ever's Aqua XL Color Paint Shadow, $25, since it has an opaque and highly-pigmented finish.)
Another look meant for the minimalistic girl, this one involves sporadic star stickers being placed across the forehead and cheekbones. Between you and us, though, we'll forgo the use of stickers altogether and use Milk Makeup's Star Tattoo Stamp ($12) instead.
Or you can always pair a diffused smoky eye with raining teardrops of micro-fine glitter, like what's shown here. It looks edgy, effortless, and just a little grungy.
The desert is hot. It will be crowded. There will be dancing. This is a tough environment for makeup reapplication, so if you're like us and you want to forgo that completely, try wearing a few coats of glitter mascara. (Yes, that exists.) We'll be using Kiko's Glitter Top Coat Mascara ($6).
This is one of those "bigger and brighter is better" looks we were talking about before. Don't just stop at clip-in hair extensions, ribbons, and tinsel. Also be sure to apply glittery eye shadow complete with rhinestones.
To us, this makeup look is the epitome of Coachella cool girl. The orange ocher eye shadow is enlivened with a touch of gloss. Try Make Face Gloss ($25). The tassel earrings and Western hat aren't necessary, but they're highly encouraged.
This one is totally unexpected and unique. Apply horizontal stickers to your brow bone. They can be emblazoned with a cute saying or your favorite band's name. This look is definitely a contender for "the most eye-catching" makeup category.
We're so in love with this one. The flowers that frame her face look a mix of paper, paint, and tattoo stamps, though we think we'll create this with temporary tattoos from Amazon. They're easy to apply, require no touch-ups, and give the same desert-flower-nymph effect.
This space-age makeup is perfect for modernizing a music festival look. Use metallic silver eye shadow from the base of the lid all the way to the brow bone. Then, turn your eyelashes and eyebrows blue using L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara in Cobalt Blue ($6).
Another option for minimalist-inspired Coachella makeup is to use a dusty orange blush and the draping technique to turn yourself into a real-life desert goddess. Swipe it across your eyelids, your temples, and your cheeks for an allover glow.
A list of our favorite Coachella makeup inspiration wouldn't be complete without a super-grungy eye look. This one uses chunky metallic glitter and black liner to create a messy rock 'n' roll vibe.
