Google is normally our first and last stop for all beauty related queries. One second we're using the search engine to find a new makeup brand, the next it's two hours later and we've fallen far, far down the Internet rabbit hole. We ask ourselves how we got here while watching a video on Kim Kardashian's beauty evolution or bookmarking an article about the newest non-surgical cosmetic treatment.
We know we're not the only ones who do this. After taking a quick poll of family, friends, and co-workers, we know that Google is the place they go to ask questions too, like "how to remove gel polish" or "the best drugstore concealers." It's no doubt that Google is ripe with beauty tips, tricks, reviews, and facts.
That said, knowing the most popular beauty-related questions on Google is equivalent to knowing the most popular beauty-related questions, well, everywhere. Google recently released the top trending questions from 2017, and they're pretty surprising. Keep scrolling to see the top 10 questions.
10. "How to apply highlighter"
We love a glowy, dewy complexion, so we're hoping the highlighter craze (which started somewhere circa 2015) never dies. With so many amazing highlighters on the market, it makes sense that people are googling tutorials and tips to make sure they're getting the most bang for their buck. We recommend applying highlighter such as Glossier's Haloscope Highlighter ($22) on the high points of the face, including the cheekbones, brow bone, inner eye, bridge of the nose, and cupid's bow. For a super-glowy look, you can even mix a couple of drops of a liquid highlighter in with your foundation.
9. How to exfoliate face
Exfoliation was also a hot topic in 2017. Sloughing off dead skin cells and pore-clogging debris is essential to keeping the skin looking bright, youthful, and blemish-free. You can use a physical exfoliator, which is anything that has a slightly grainy texture that is manually massaged against the skin, or a chemical exfoliator, which utilizes safe-for-skin acids (lactic and glycolic) to chemically remove impurities. Need some help picking an exfoliator? We can help you with that.
8. "How to get rid of under eye bags"
Under eye bags are both annoying and stubborn. Almost everyone deals with dark circles and puffiness at some point, so we're not surprised this ranked on Google's list. There are a number of causes (as celeb esthetician Joanna Vargas taught us), and a variety of treatments including firming and brightening eye creams, micro-needling devices, and facial massage techniques.
7. "How to apply Lipsense"
We were most surprised by this question since it's so specific. LipSense is a brand of lip products that provide super long-wearing color. It applies like a normal liquid lipstick, though it's recommended you let it dry completely before layering on more product. It's then sealed with the Lipsense Gloss, which adds hydration and seals in the color. (The blog Twist Me Pretty has a great in-depth tutorial).
6. "How to shrink pores"
According to most dermatologists, the diameter of your pores can't actually be shrunk, though the appearance can be minimized using certain products. For example, we're fans of Benefit's cult favorite The POREfessional Pores No More Primer ($31). You can also minimize the appearance of pores through a proper skincare routine.
5. "How to get rid of acne scars"
Like large pores, acne scars are another common complexion concern. First comes the acne, and then comes the scars—but who has the time or patience for that? Luckily there are many different treatments, both at-home and in-clinic, that can help minimize the appearance of them. The buzziest treatment, aka chemical peels, exfoliate the top layer of the skin to smooth the look and texture.
4. " How to do eye shadow"
Eye shadow is one of the most intimidating makeup products to apply (which is why one K-beauty company invented something called an "Eye Magazine" to make the process simpler). Luckily, we have a vast array of expert-lead eye tutorials. Check out some of our favorites from celeb makeup artists like Katie Jane Hughes, Tobi Henney, Sam Chapman, Nicola Chapman, and Mélanie Inglessis.
3. "How to take off acrylic nails at home"
Taking off acrylic nails at home is tricky. On one hand, it could save you the time and money it would take to go into a salon, but on the other hand, it could damage your nails if it isn't done correctly. We can totally see why people ask for Google's wisdom before attempting in on their own, though the actual process is pretty simple. It involves pure acetone, baby oil, and some patience.
2. "How to get rid of back acne"
Back acne, or "bacne" as it's colloquially called, is always infuriating, especially in the warmer months when bathing suits and tank tops are season must-haves. If you want to treat yours, you'll want to follow these tips from experts.
1. " How to get rid of pimples"
And finally, for the number one most searched beauty question on Google. It's a classic question we've all asked ourselves and/or wondered while staring at our pimples in the bathroom mirror. Whether it's hormonal, cystic, or something else, you'll want to see six natural remedies for acne that actually work.
