Morning routines are key. The choices you make first thing—from your breakfast to whether or not you go to the gym—set the tone for your day. In fact, science says our self-control actually depletes as the day wears on, so the first hour is when your willpower is at its peak. This means you need to pack your mornings with habits that are easily broken, e.g., eating healthy, working out, making to-do lists. Essentially you need to tick the boxes on those things you find yourself making guilt-ridden excuses to get out of come the afternoon.
Scientists know this, and fabulous models do too. They know that clocking up those wellness "chores" in the morning is key to kick-starting your day in the most positive way. We did some research on our favourite supers to find out what goes into the first hour of their days, from checking emails (just like us!) to filling up on alkaline smoothies (not so much), keep reading for the secrets to living the most productive mornings.
"One of my favorite meals is breakfast!" Lindsay Ellingson told Byrdie. "If I'm not at my local organic restaurant, I like to mix Greek yogurt with raw honey and berries. Not only is the yogurt packed with protein to keep you energized in the morning, but the berries provide antioxidants, which are great for your skin!"
Ellingson revealed to The Cut that she avoids coffee or tea first thing: "I had a consultation with the ayurvedic specialist who told me that I should drink warm, filtered water in the morning. He said your body absorbs the warm water better than cold and that it's really soothing to your stomach."
"I like to make decisions [in the morning when] my mind is fresh," Alessandra Ambrosio told Self.com. "I do yoga, Pilates [and] The Bar Method. I stay motivated by making workouts part of my routine—I just do it!"
She also revealed to Vogue Paris she takes "a moment alone to meditate on what is really important in life." Her "perfect breakfast" is an avocado with boiled or fried eggs lightly browned with coconut oil. And a "big cup of coffee… You can't beat it!"
"I wake up and write three pages of anything. I start being like, I don't know what to write… [But] you feel a lot less crazy after. It can be a bit hard to do sometimes though. It's good to release a lot and somewhere in those pages, you'll find an … idea,” Delevingne told Hello! magazine.
"I have a chakra morning meditation that I like to practice, it's designed so you can begin your day with a bright, positive energy frequency and surround yourself with healing light," Miranda Kerr told Vogue. "I also like to do at least 20 minutes of exercise; generally it’s yoga or Pilates.
"For maximum energy and vitality I make a green power smoothie that is alkalizing and high in vitamins and minerals. Typically my own recipe is this: Young fresh coconut water, half glass of almond milk, 1 tbsp acai powder, 1 tbsp goji berries, 1 tbsp spirulina, 1 tbsp raw cacao powder, 1 tbsp maca powder, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1 tbsp raw vegan protein powder, and 1 tbsp of coconut oil."
Maxwell revealed to The Coveteur that she's pretty much like the rest of us when it comes to mornings. "First thing, I check my phone—social media and emails. After that, I'll hit the shower and then have my coffee. Coffee in the morning is essential. I like tea too, but I do coffee in the morning—usually, an almond latte. I shower every morning. It wakes me up, refreshes me and gets me ready for my day. I moisturize, put on some lip balm, brush my hair. Then I get dressed and get going."
"I love to work out first thing in the morning. I wake up a bit earlier, have a coffee and go straight to a workout or run. Even if it's just 20 minutes, it's something to get my day started," Karlie Kloss told us. "Then I go from that—jump in the shower and brush my teeth in [there]. I multitask! I don't take a ton of time in the morning to get ready. I like to make time to have a yummy breakfast like something really filling. I love to have an egg white omelette with spinach, avocado and zucchini, then I run out the door."
