On the first Monday in May, celebrities, influencers, and pretty much everyone who’s anyone flocks to the 1000 block of Fifth Avenue in New York City for the biggest fashion event of the year, the Met Gala. Given that the event is hosted by none other than Vogue’s editor in chief, Anna Wintour, it’s no surprise that the Met Gala red carpet is swarming with attendees primped to perfection and dressed in their best. And while the clothes might get all the attention on this red carpet, we can’t help but stare at the gorgeous hair and makeup looks accompanying the avant-garde attire, which is why we rounded up the best beauty looks from this year’s soirée.
Considering this year’s theme “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons,” we expected to see a plethora of artistic and edgy beauty looks. However, nothing could prepare us for Lily Collins’s blunt bob and dark lip duo or Kylie Jenner’s Met Gala look, aka a new platinum hairstyle. To see the most notable looks from the 2017 Met Gala red carpet, click through the slideshow below.
To balance out Collins’s soft and, for lack of a better word, frilly ensemble, makeup artist Fiona Stiles created a sultry beauty look courtesy of spidery lashes, and a burgundy lip via Lancome L’absolu Rouge Lipstick in 397 Berry Noir ($32). To accompany her bold beauty look, hairstylist Gregory Russell created an edgy bob for Collins, which he kept in place with a spritz of Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Anti-Humidity Hairspray ($4).
Vanngo enhanced Gomez’s natural beauty with a pop of fuchsia on her lids. To create the runway-meets–red carpet look, Vanngo says to use Marc Jacobs Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Popular ($25), along the top lash line extending to the outer third of the eyelid. To finish off the look, Vanngo recommends brushing and blending into your shape of choice.
While Hudson’s hair is blonder than usual, her beauty look is in line with her signature style: bronzed and beautiful.
Kim Kardashian West keeps it simple on the Met Gala red carpet with a contoured face accompanied by stick straight tresses. To get Kardashian West’s structured hairstyle, hairstylist Michael Silva says to first spray dry hair with Toni & Guy’s Medium Hold Hairspray ($10), and then go over it with a straightener.
Does it get any better than Gigi Hadid’s tousled bun and graphic cat eye? We think not.
The trick to Emma Roberts’s flawless complexion? A solid night-before routine. According to Charlotte Tilbury, Roberts used Tilbury’s Overnight Bronze and Glow Mask ($55) the night before the big event to have a natural-looking glow the day of. And as for Roberts’s blowout, hairstylist Christian Marc used Kenra’s Platinum Blow Dry Spray ($22) for a glossy, yet voluminous look.
If Bella Hadid’s hair looks different to you, that’s because it is. While the 20-year-old model’s newest hairstyle isn’t much shorter, it’s much more angular and, dare we say it, a whole lot more stylish.
Kylie Jenner debuted her latest hair transformation, a platinum bob sitting just above her chin, on the 2017 Met Gala red carpet.
Candice Swanepoel brings the drama to the red carpet with slicked-back hair and a bold cat eye.
Rihanna further accessorized her artistic outfit with a sleek top knot and monochromatic pink makeup.
Karlie Kloss is giving us major ’90s vibes with her sophisticated blond bob on the 2017 Met Gala red carpet.
Vanngo pulled inspiration from Ratajkowski’s aqua-colored dress and sketched Marc Jacobs Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Whirlpool ($25), a bright teal shade, across her lash line all the way to the outer corner of the eye.
With high-volume hair and a muted pout, J.Lo’s beauty look comes straight from the ’60s.
Kendall Jenner proves that a red lip and deep side part make the perfect duo.
To get Lily-Rose Depp’s perfectly undone waves, hairstylist Johnnie Sapong says to apply Leonor Greyl Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice ($46) to wet hair just before drying. When dry, wave the hair with a medium curling iron, and then lightly pull back the hair leaving it loose enough to shape the face. The result: effortlessly chic tresses à la Depp.
Johnson looked pretty in pink with a dash of blush on the apples of her cheeks and a petal-toned pout to match.
Zendaya’s natural textured tresses and tangerine pout are the perfect complements to her floral gown.
Ruby Rose continuously surprises us with new ways to style a pixie. And this high-volume ’do does not disappoint.
Witherspoon rocked a sleek, structured updo courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel. To create this look, Abergel used Virtue Uplifted Volumizing Whip ($36) on towel-dried hair and added Virtue Polish Un-Frizz Cream ($40) to the ends of Witherspoon’s tresses before drying and sculpting this modern hairstyle. And as for her luminous skin, you can thank makeup artist Molly Stern and Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Miracle Hydrating Mist ($19), which she used just before applying Witherspoon’s makeup.
To create Lupita Nyong’o’s technicolor lids, makeup artist Nick Barose used a mix of Lancome’s Color Design Sensational Effect Eyeshadow ($21) in coral, violet, yellow, and teal shades.
A little bit of punk and a whole lot of pretty, Lena Dunham’s combo of a messy bun and a smoky eye is bound to be iconic.
A little bit edgy and a whole lot of glam, Joan Smalls rocks wet locks and multiple piercings. To get her wet tresses, hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons used Alterna Haircare Caviar Omega+ Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist ($34) throughout Smalls’s locks.
Makeup artist Emma Lovell complemented Gwyneth Paltrow’s pastel pink dress with a petal pink lip via Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick in Liv It Up ($34) and Lip Lustre in Seduction ($22). To finish off the look, hairstylist Blake Erik created a sleek middle-part pony and hid the elastic with Paltrow's own tresses and Alterna Haircare’s Extra Hold Hairspray ($30).
Chung stayed true to her signature style and rocked bedhead tresses with minimal makeup. To add just a dash of color to her beauty look, makeup artist Charlotte Day created a rosy colored lip by combining Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk ($22) and Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk ($34).
Rita Ora’s red lip and platinum pixie (albeit fake) were stunning. To re-create Ora’s deep red statement lip, makeup artist Kathy Jeung says to use Rimmel London’s Lasting Finish Kate Moss Matte Lipstick in Kiss of Life ($5).
Doutzen Kroes looked gorgeous on the 2017 Met Gala red carpet with minimal makeup and messy waves. To achieve Kroes’s perfectly undone tresses, hairstylist Dominick Pucciarello, says to use a T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand ($270) and drag the hair up and down the wand a few times (not wrapping the hair around the wand) so as to give a bend instead of a curl.
No one rocks glowing skin and slicked-back tresses better than Adriana Lima.
Ashley Graham expertly accessorized her dress with a bright red statement lip and a deeply parted updo, created by hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons and Alterna Haircare’s Caviar Working Hair Spray ($8).
Kate Hudson, Priyanka Chopra, and Hailee Steinfeld rocked the Gala’s most popular hairstyle: the topknot. To get the look, hairstylist Gregory Russell says to work John Frieda Frizz Ease Clearly Defined Styling Gel ($7) through wet hair. Then, using a brush, pull your hair up to the crown of your head, twist into your desired shape, pin, gently blow-dry with a diffuser, and set with John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray ($7).
You can always count on Mary-Kate and Ashley to bring boho vibes to the red carpet.
To match her slicked-back tresses, Makeup Artist Lisa Storey created a classic beauty look befitting Miranda Kerr. To do just that, Storey used Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation ($48) and topped off the look with a red lip.
Mandy Moore makes a major beauty statement with a pop of lavender around her lids.
As is usual, Blake Lively brought old Hollywood glam to the Met Gala red carpet.
