Finding the right conditioner for your hair type can be tricky. Maybe you have textured hair that needs lots of moisture but heavily hydrating formulas add too much weight to their fine density. Maybe you love a brand’s shampoo but their conditioner isn’t doing it for you. Maybe no matter what conditioner you try, you’re left with tangled or frizzy hair later in the day. There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to choosing a conditioner! This is why we’re here, testing away, to help you Byrdies figure out which beauty products are right for you.
Personally, I can’t seem to ward off unwanted frizz. It’s a constant battle for me at all times of the year. I know frizz is generally a sign of damage, but I’m not entirely sure where I’m going wrong. I put Maui Moisture’s Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Conditioner to the test to see if it could help my hair woes.
Keep reading for my honest review.

About the brand: Maui Moisture is dedicated to making hair products inspired by the natural ingredients found on tropical islands, like Maui. Their products share a unique blend of aloe vera and pure coconut water infusion in an effort to enhance moisture in all hair types.
About My Hair: Overworked
Depending on what products I use, my hair type falls between 2a and 2b waves and has a medium density. My hair rarely ever tangles, so I’m not big on brushing frequently, but I normally comb through with a frizz-fighting product post-shower and let my hair air dry as often as possible. After recently cutting my hair shorter, I’ve been more reliant on heat styling and haven’t worn my waves in their natural state as often as I did with longer hair. My weekly grind consists of daily workouts and testing various tools and products, so between sweaty roots and a ponytail to frequent heat exposure, my hair hasn’t gotten a lot of intentional TLC. I wash when I can, usually every three days, but otherwise, I feel like my strands and I are just getting by.
The Feel: Light and creamy
This conditioner feels light in the hand and the hair. It has a creaminess that’s soft to the touch. Normally when I think about a creamy formula, I imagine it feeling thick and rich. But this conditioner made my strands feel softer even while they were wet, which I found extremely impressive and novel compared to other conditioners I’ve tried.
The Scent: Tropical paradise in a bottle
Holy yum. These products are tropical paradise trapped in a bottle and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be looking up flight fares one week into using anything from Maui Moisture. Their formulas put island vibes on the brain. I’m a sucker for coconut scented products, and this was strong enough to dilute that not-so-nice scent of shea butter. There’s no mango in the ingredients list, but it has that same warmth in its scent. It’s like a smoothie for your hair, but remember, only your strands are allowed to drink it in!
Ingredients: Island perks
Maui Moisture makes all of its products based on the inspiration of ingredients found on island locales, like Maui. This also makes them clean by our Byrdie standards with no silicones, no sulfates, no PEGs, etc. Aloe vera is the first listed ingredient, which works to soothe and repair the hair the same way it does with skin. Aloe has tons of natural perks with so many vitamins and antioxidants packed inside, it has the power to moisturize dry strands, promote hair growth and keep dandruff under control. This conditioner is also infused with creamy shea butter, coconut oil, and macadamia oil which will help your hair quench its thirst.
The Results: Softer strands
I could feel my natural waves finding their shape as soon as I applied this conditioner in the shower. I left the conditioner on my ends for 3-5 minutes as recommended and I paired it with its complementary shampoo for maximum results.
This conditioner left my hair feeling super soft.
What I didn’t like much about my results was that my hair didn’t air dry as nicely as I’d hoped. They felt hydrated but their new softness made my waves a little puffier than I cared for. I think this is due to having medium-density strands that aren’t as coarse as many other hair types with natural textures. I also experienced the need to wash my hair a day earlier than usual, washing every second day versus every third. This conditioner plus all the exercise didn’t bode well for my strands’ lifestyle and made my roots feel flatter than normal in less time. Instead of letting my hair dry in its natural state, I found most of my comfort with the continued application of heat to tame that frizz and puffiness between washes. A quick go with my hot brush and I was confidently loving how smooth and healthy my hair felt.
The Value: A crazy good deal
I have plenty of other conditioners that cater to wavy and curly strands and all of them range in around $3-$5 per ounce. The Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Conditioner is less than $1 an ounce! And it comes in a 13 oz bottle which will last much longer than the typical 5-8 oz bottle that you’d normally find at a higher price point.

Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Conditioner ($24): This has been one of my favorite curl-catering products I’ve ever tried. This conditioner not only hydrates the hair but adds a protective barrier around each strand that locks in moisture and wards off unwanted frizz. If you’re looking to enhance your natural waves and keep frizz at bay, this product is your savior.
Virtue Labs Curls Conditioner ($40): Another hydrating, curl-enhancing conditioner that’s a little on the pricier side is this one from Virtue Labs. It keeps the hair soft and hydrated without poofy air-dries or weighed-down strands. It isn’t the best bang for your buck, but this is a quality conditioner, especially for finer densities looking for a weightless smoothing of their natural waves.
The Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Conditioner gives you a great bang for your buck. If you have coarse, textured strands looking to quench their thirst, this is an absolute must-try conditioner. It may not be as ideal for fine to medium density types, but it’s bound to leave you with softened, nourished hair no matter what.
